A lot of the high-quality European labels that served up the Early Music movement in the '80's disappeared over the last 10 years, at least from our market, to be replaced by no-name labels and unknown East European orchestras. This shook the classical buyers a bit, who after all have conservative tastes and don't like surprises. The good news is that NPR affiliates are moving in to fill the cultural void left in radio by the Clearchannel mafia, filling the airwaves with more choice in classical programming than ever before (include jazz in that equation, it's become accepted as a kind of "cubist classicism" since Ken Burn's Jazz documentary).
