For precisely the reasons you state, the dow isn't a very a useful index. It's ridiculous that it gets higher billing that the s&p500 or the Wilshire 5000.

The trade balance with China is significant problem. Everyone knows that China manipulates their currency but what many forget is that this is only made possible because of the continual issuance of large amounts of treasuries by a US government that cannot control its spending. Eliminate the deficit and you will eliminate the primary means that other countries use to manipulate dollar exchange rates.

The situation seems to have stabilized as far as the economy goes. Current stock prices have been slow in recognizing the bad shape future earnings are going to be. It seems like we're heading for a Japan style malaise. However, Japan's decline was not instantaneous. There is indeed a lot of money sitting on the sidelines and we would be fools not to realize that rallies are bound to happen. Longer term, I don't see us effectively reducing debt except through defaulting so I don't see a sustained recovery for a long time.

It was a near tear tradeable bottom but it was not the long term bottom Buffett was calling for. He was dead wrong on that count. I'm expecting a bottom sometime next year. It will be bloody. I also expect a serious bear market rally sometime next year before the bottom.
