  • Weighing The Week Ahead: Is A Recession Looming?  [View article]
    Jeff,

You listed 8 recession arguments and only 4 non-rececession arguments. Unfortunately, 3 of the 4 non-recession arguments speak to past cycles. But what if this global cycle is different? Some bright investors like Dalio, Soros, Gundlach are not optimistic, because the world is:

    1) approaching the end of a long-term global debt cycle
    2) has little growth prospects if credit contracts
    3) less impacted by US growth than at any time since WWII
    4) in a state of worse demographics than past cycles.

Do the models you tell us rely on consider these factors?

WestEnd, not one single word about ecosystem, really? Everyone should know by now it is NOT about a single device. It IS about each user's seamless experience from wrist to hand to lap to desk to home to car! It's never been about the device. It will always be about the intimacy of the relationship.

  • The IBM Valuation Disagreement  [View article]
Apple, Microsoft, Google, and IBM net cash postions are $141Bil, $72Bil, $72Bil, and $0Bil, respectively.
Employee compositions are adaptable millenials, adaptable millenials, adaptable millenials, and depressed boomers.
A wise man once said it is not the strongest or the most intelligent that survive, it is those most adaptable to change.
Tech, like investment banking, is dominated by those with the best staff and most resources.
Bond market vigilantes will not let IBM buy back shares indefinitely.
Warren and others should have guessed how badly this might end for IBM.

Everybody keeps assuming long term rates are going higher, that hasn't been the case since the 1970's, and global demographics indicate otherwise.

  • The No. 1 Stock In The World - Part 3  [View article]
"While I respect those who refuse to invest in cigarette manufacturers, my No. 1 job is to help my family by making sound financial decisions. Corporations associated with weapons, fattening foods, sugary drinks, coal and oil also are rather unhealthy; I own companies in all of those fields, too, and I will leave it to others to focus on "socially conscious" investments."

Fat, sugar, coal, and oil all meet basic human needs. Where is the human need in nicotine? Investing in MO is immoral because cigarettes provide absolutely no benefit to society whatsoever. Does doing evil really help your family?? Wake up!

  • China's Supreme Court Clears Tencent Of Monopoly Claims  [View article]
Thanks Doug. I enjoy learning about the Chinese market. I am reading a book "Zero to One" by venture capitalist, Peter Thiel. He makes some interesting points about how virtually all great tech companies are monopolies by their very nature because they create goods or services that never existed in the past. He further makes the point that this is may be good or bad depending on your point of view as the entrepreneur, the consumer, or the regulator. Societies must decide. In the United States case, our government both protects and and opposes monopolies through the U.S. Patent Office and through the U.S Anti-Trust Division.
