  • WSJ: Yahoo set to invest in Snapchat at $10B valuation [View news story]
I agree Andreas, I'm up 146% and I'll take MM over Carol Bartz or Scott Thompson any day.

And given what Facebook ponied up for Whatsapp, maybe the relatively paltry billion spent on Tumblr (the only big acquisition Mayer has really made) can prove to be a steal in the long run.

  • Time For Yahoo To Buy The New York Times [View article]
"It's a good time because Yahoo needs to do something to prevent a takeover that might come from Softbank (OTCPK:SFTBF) or Alibaba..."

Why? I think most of us shareholders wouldn't mind that one bit.

  • Yahoo responds to Starboard; 3 more products shuttered [View news story]
As a YHOO long of a couple years, I welcome activists targeting the company, but a merger with AOL is worst case scenario. I can't help but think that Starboard has their own ulterior motives (like owning a big stake in AOL) that don't serve the average YHOO shareholder.

  • This Could Be The Catalyst To Push GE's Shares Higher [View article]
I agree. I'm a shareholder and I like getting dividends, but given GE's not-to-distant past (massive dividend cut about 5 years ago), this is one company that I'd prefer play it safe with their payout.

  • U.S. government threatened huge fines to force Yahoo to release data [View news story]
I'm pretty sure that those fines wouldn't be deductible.

Besides, what's to stop them from getting fined and then having the FBI kick down the door and seize their data anyway?

  • Starbucks' Pullback From $80 Presents A Buying Opportunity [View article]
I don't think Schultz's stance in that case hurt Starbucks one bit. The younger generations are decidedly pro-gay marriage, gays generally have above-average disposable income, and amongst those who care either way and buy $5 coffees, I'm sure he invited more business.

  • Union Pacific Corporation beats by $0.06, misses on revenue [View news story]
What constitutes a "miss" or inline on $5.63 billion revenue? $90 million seems borderline immaterial, would they still call it a miss if it was $30 million off? $3 million? $3? Where is the line drawn?

  • Dave Van Knapp Positions For 2014: The Best Dividend Growth Stocks Will Pay Out More This Year [View article]
"Dividend growth investing also has a psychological appeal. Managing the emotions of investing is a huge part of success no matter what your strategy is. I have found that focusing on the dividend side of the equation pretty much insulates me from worrying about fluctuations in the market."

I've never figured out a good way to articulate this, but the whole psychological appeal to me of dividends is that knowing when to sell a stock is way more difficult than knowing when to buy, and just as a biweekly payroll deduction helps me dollar cost average into the market, the quarterly dividend helps me DCA my way back out in some small way (at least out of my current positions, I do tend to reinvest it elsewhere).

  • Coca-Cola: No Return Potential Beyond The Dividend [View article]
I drink Coke pretty much every day, but I've bought cans almost exclusively for the last 20 years because I can't stand those stupid plastic bottles.

  • ModernGraham Valuation Of Union Pacific Corp. [View article]
There's a defensive aspect to UNP which can't be captured by these cookie-cutter metrics: Suppose you have an extremely large load that needs to be moved across the western US. What other railroad are you going to distribute it with?

I dunno. They said the same about Tumblr, but haven't they pretty much left it alone since they bought it?

  • Union Pacific: Let This Low-Yielding Train Come Into The Station, Then Board It [View article]
I like the analogy, but part of me suspects that stock splits happen because they work, regardless of how irrational the reasoning behind it is.

  • The Young And Restless Portfolio Has Had Spectacular Gains, Is It Time To Sell? [View article]
After the last "flash crash", I swore off stop loss orders. It would suck to have a stock suddenly lose 10% of its value, automatically sell at a loss, and then see the share price recover within a few minutes.
