How about the old fashioned vehicles: i.e. I Bonds - buy /sell them in the bank [or internet Treasurydirect], compounded interest, rates adjusted every 6 months, current rate 5.64%. Yes, it is not perfect and sexy investment but it provides some security in addition to real estate, stocks and falling 401K.
