MLPs And Other Tax Preference Investments On The Chopping Block [View article]
The comments about Obama raising tax rates on corporations is interesting. So many don't think it through: Raise taxes on a corporation and it will just pass the costs on to their service or product--ultimately on to the consumer! So who really pays more???
I hope Obama's advisers stress this important fact to him!

At least the IRS allows us a credit for all foreign taxes paid. The IRS used to have a complex form to fill out, but now it is easy to deduct foreign taxes paid.

Didn't Obama GIVE $2 billion to Brazil to help develop its offshore oil fields? I wonder if the leader of Brazil will really use that money for its intended purpose, but a gift is a gift, right? Also wondering why Obama GAVE our taxdollars away--is he hoping for some kind of a favor in return? No deals were reported by our press.

I don't think so. If any investment is set up as an IRA, there are no tax consequences until you cash it in.
Many people won't hold an MLP as an IRA because you don't benefit from all the tax deductions. MLP send out K-1's at tax time because each unit holder is a partner, and you take your share of profits and losses and other expenses. With an IRA there are no tax reportings until you cash it in.

I noticed that also. I've also read, many times, NOT to "buy a dividend." I think that means not to buy around the time a dividend will be declared or paid. I'm not sure, but just in case, I always check a company's ex-dividend date !
I am also an investor in only good companies that pay dividends. When the entire market tanks, my psychology is: "Well, at least I'm still getting dividends" ! Sometimes, I buy more shares on the dips.
I am retired, and that has not been discussed here. Dividends are really important to retirees for additional income, if needed. Thus, I was as disappointed as those in the U.K. when BP cut its dividend to zero. It is now paying again, but muich less. Hopefully in the future, the higher dividend will be restored.

Thanks to all for a good discussion. I learned a lot about BP from you. I am long on BP, and waiting for them to restore the dividend. I am also long on RDS.A and am not happy about their deal with the Russians. I do not, and never have, trusted the Russians and think Shell will get screwed on this deal. By the way, I was glad the BP got out of it.

Dropping the dividend, then reinstating it much lower looked like a step in the right direction, but I do not believe any company makes decisions just to make shareholders happy! With so many retirees depending on BP's dividends, these decisions could not have been made with investors' best interests at heart. I think all dividends decisions are made based on profits...period.
This is why stock purchases must keep profits as their number one priority in choosing where to invest.
Why MLPs Are Extremely Overvalued As An Asset Class (Part 1) [View article]
I own units in many MLPs, here and in Canada. The reason is their nontaxable distributions, steady income, and a few taxable deductions. The K-1's are a nightmare and greatly time consuming at tax time, but over the years I am getting used to it. (Do one, and the others are easy to report.)
I am happy with my investments, but sure wish there was an easier way to report to the IRS.

I have heard/read that MLP's should not be used for tax-deferred retirement accounts because they will still issue you a tax document that must be reported. IRS expects you to report gains/losses in the year incurred, therefore you can't defer any gains reported by any MLP or corporation--foreign or otherwise.
The best form to hold retirement assets, therefore, are mutual funds and annuities. Please correct me if you know for sure otherwise!

Good points, John. I want to add that ALL foreign based companies are withholding taxes from dividends paid to foreign investors. Those taxes really add up, and I am rethinking the benefits of those dividends and comparing them to American oil co's. I must add that I am in a low tax bracket in U.S., thus a 5% dividend earned here is worth much more to me than a 5% foreign dividend.

We tried this, and the home turned into a "money pit." We tried managing properties--again, too much work/responsibility for too little pay. You have to have a stomach for this method of making a few bucks!
Also, no one mentioned evictions and the legal hoops you must go through to get nonpaying tenants out. They usually trash the place first.
I'd rather invest in good companies that pay dividends!

I, too, like the MLPs for steady income. Yes, their share price can fluctuate, but usually not as much as regular stock shares. The safety of payments is easily understood when you think of what most of these MLPs do: own and operate pipelines across the country and Canada. Regardless of the economy, people are going to heat their homes.
