  • Report: J.C. Penney to end Martha Stewart partnership [View news story]
I never understood what the appeal of Martha Stewart was and I am not seeing how Macy's is doing so well with her brand? I agree with Mr. Ullman when he states her merchandise isn't anything special.

The home stores at JCP are confusing with all the small shops and items are on the high side in comparison to other retail outlets. Honestly, people just don't have the extra money to buy designer home items these days even though some of them are nicer looking. I look for JCP for quality and value.

  • New York Appeals Judge Richard Andrias has temporarily blocked J.C. Penney (JCP) from selling "JCP Everyday" products designed by Martha Stewart (MSO). Andrias is due to decide by tomorrow whether to extend the ban while an appeal from Macy's (M) over whether JCP can sell the products is pending. On Friday, a lower-court judge ruled that JCP could do so. (previous[View news story]
This is unfortunate for JCP if they lose this appeal. Why the former executive team lead by Ron Johnson did not look at this possibility does not speak favorably in regards to their leadership. From what I have read, Martha Stewart products are profitable at Macy's. I am pulling for JCP and hope they get a break with this case.

  • Road To Profitability Still Feasible For J.C. Penney [View article]
I am going to return shopping at JCP. I really do not want this retail store to fail. I hope other core customers gives them a chance. Lots of individuals need these jobs.

I see the lack of merchandise as a greater issue this past year when JCP discontinued established brands which were liked by many and online issues after they discontinued the old catalog department. It just became easier to shop elsewhere.

  • Wal-Mart Should Pick Off J.C. Penney [View article]
As a shopper, I would not be crazy putting my apparel on the same check out surface as meat and produce. I like Walmart for groceries and shampoo etc., but I rather go to a boutique or department store for clothing. Maybe it is just me? I have bought kids clothing both at Walmart and Target,

  • J.C. Penney Just Sealed Its Fate [View article]
Bottom line, the reason JCP is in trouble is they lost their core customers and did not replace them with new customers or enough new customers.

If the core customers return, this may buy time. Everyone felt Johnson was the one who could turn things around so who is to say the return of a CEO couldn't at least stabilize the company.

  • Fresh takes on J.C. Penney (JCP -11.7%): 1) Piper Jaffray calls the company "powerless" to prevent a further deterioration of sales, expecting another $1B in cash to get burned up this year. 2) Deutsche Bank warns that with Bill Ackman losing his influence with the retailer's board he could lighten his stake and put significant pressure on shares. 3) Hedgeye thinks a sale might be a way out of the morass for new CEO Myron Ullman. "He could help to put lipstick on the pig and get it sold." (JCP timeline[View news story]
Who would you suggest in house. At least short term, it seems like the best choice based on he would have recent knowledge of JCP operations and his lack of performance during a recession was nowhere near Mr. Johnson's past year.
I think customers and employees hope Mr. Ullman can save JCP.

  • J.C. Penney (JCP) confirms Ron Johnson is "stepping down and leaving the company." Mike Ullman, who was J.C. Penney's CEO until Nov. 2011, is replacing Johnson as CEO, and has also been elected to the company's board. Investors don't seem crazy about the choice, JCP now just +0.5% AH. (previous) Update (5:33): Shares are now down 4.4% AH. [View news story]
Just how much compensation will Mr. Johnson receive leaving JCP. If he is all fair, he will leave with nothing after the amount of job loss resulted while he was CEO. He has been compensated more than he deserves based on JCP results this past year.

I image his business practices will be judged or studied for years to come.
Would JCP rehire some of their former employees with years of experience?

  • The emergency plan: If J.C. Penney (JCP) loses its courtroom battle to sell Martha Stewart home goods inside of its stores, the retailer will reportedly look to Asian suppliers to produce an emergency line of private label bath products, bed linens and kitchenware to fill the void. The trick is that production could take 75 to 90 days and the company would have to takes losses on quite a bit of inventory. [View news story]
I am not a retail expert, but this seems like a huge costly error by the executives at JCP. I am not sure why they could not develop their own line with all the fresh personalities on shows like HGTV or The Food Channel.

  • The 8 Point Path To J.C. Penney's Obsolescence [View article]
I believe Kohl's and Macy's compete directly with JCP. I question if lost customers will return, but bringing back St. John's Bay line will help if it hasn't changed in quality.

  • J.C. Penney (JCP) ended its fiscal year on February 2 with 116K employees, according to a SEC filing. The figure is a bit of a curiosity because it marks a reduction of 43K employees during the year, more than twice the job cuts CEO Ron Johnson testified on. The discrepancy may be in how seasonal workers are counted by the retailer. (10-K[View news story]
    Jack,

I do not work for Penny's, but was a good customer until the recent changes. However, as a customer, I feel I am not alone in seeing how quickly JCP has fallen as the result of Mr. Johnson's and the boards actions who also have laid off thousands of dedicated employees. Life just isn't fair at times.

Sad to see the large number of jobs lost within one year. How do you reduce this number of employees and expect to see positive results.

How very sad for these individuals. I wonder how well the JCP board members sleep at night.

Retailgirl, One thing JCP has going for them is their friendly and helpful sales associate. All I think many customers asked was JCP carry recently discontinued apparel lines even if it was only online like St. John's Bay. JCP had to think these clothing lines were popular since they sold out quickly online (Cabin Creek) when customers found out they were being discontinued. These were brands that were easy to order online and their quality was very good. Money I used to spend at JCP, now is spent at a recently built Kohl's, but I am open to return to JCP if they offer items I purchased in the past even if it is just online. Personally, I am not a huge coupon customer, but I enjoy the coupon for using my Kohl's charge.
I also wonder why the younger customers have not responded to the changes?
