"Smoot-Hawley, here we come," Robert Reich writes, as deficit hawks sure to gain ground after mid-term elections will kill chances of stimulating the economy, making free trade a "sitting duck" in an atmosphere where the ground troops for both parties - tea party Republicans and union Democrats - believe free trade is bad. The average middle class person could not guess the price of an ounce of gold to the nearest thousand.

We're supposed to be outraged that almost 3,000 millionaires are collecting unemployment benefits. But assuming they're not movie stars living off benefits between pictures, is it an abomination that they collect on an insurance policy they've paid for? [View news story]

Correct, there are some not able to be -insert profession here-; my point is that when one is able to get YEARS of U/C, why bother taking a job you feel is beneath you, or doesn't pay what you think you should be making, etc, etc.etc. correct, gov. is paying for the schooling, but they are getting that money back plus interest unless the student dies/leaves the country. Can't default on those loans. And the only people who can't be phlebotomists are ones with parkinsons. If you are squeamish around blood, get over it. I have a fear of heights but have done roofing work in college when I needed the money.

In 99 weeks, you could have gotten a cdl, become a police officer, phlebotomist, lpn, the list is virtually endless. How there are people that have been unemployed for 99 weeks and STILL have no options is unreal. After that first year of nothing but UC income, the gov. will throw money at you hand over fist if you want to go school/learn a trade. Hell, the police pay you while attending school. There is the military as well, but it doesn't seem anyone thinks they should stoop as low as truck driving or the armed forces.
Small business sentiment is up slightly, says the latest NFIB survey, but small business owners are fighting a part of the new health care law that would require them to file a 1099 tax report for every vendor transaction valued at $600 or more. NFIB says the measure would create "a tremendous paperwork compliance burden." [View news story]

...or a bunch of useless construction projects going on and creating gridlock everywhere. There are spots on I95 in Fl. that have made virtually no progress in the 3 years I have lived down here. Might as well just send checks to construction workers to stay home. The roads would still be untouched, but at least the traffic jams would cease.
If you need to buy and hold for 30 years to get a return, you are paying a high opportunity cost with that money being sidelined in the stock market. May as well figure out something else to do with it.

Hmmm, the gov is going to rate company's vehicles now, one of which they are the major stockholder and getting a public reaming for not recouping the money loaned. No conflict of interest here.....
