Do Not Short Apple Stock
Given that this article was written in April, and I disagreed with a couple of your points on the first read, I feel slightly vindicated that your opinion that $625 might have been a good investment back in April, given that it lies around the $575 mark now.
Apple's break-though technologies have dried up. The MacBook Pro was a game changer, and will continue to make inroads in the laptop market. How much further, conceptually, can the ipod go? Portable music was a huge moment, but at the end of the day, apart from screen:volume ratio, and increased hard-drive size, little progress has been made since the original Nano. In addition, the fact that they are hoarding $100bn of cash worries me as a potential investor. Where is their next massive project that requires volumes of cash in R&D? Where are curvy screens, built-in scanners and global cloud access?
Maybe Apple are developing these technologies as we speak, but unless they start to deliver progress combined with affordability, they will lose market share to their competitors, who have none of the complacency the most valuable company in the world might have.
In the long term, I believe Apple is as good a bet as any. For now, investors should remain wary until they catch wind of their next big development, and we can ride the Apple wave again.
