Remember that in the mid-'70s, some of America's great industrial powerhouses were taking their last breaths. Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Bethlehem, Wheeling - all of these cities had major sources of jobs taken away as China, India and other emerging markets took over. For 15 years the US floundered economically, until technology and services and consumer borrowing pulled us into a new economic "prosperity". I have to imagine that we're in for a similar time - shrinking banking and automotive companies, etc., and a re-shaping of the global economy.
