Striking a delicate balance between adds and content is just right. Not that most people are annoyed by ads; people are annoyed by 'annoying' non-creative, too pushy ads.

  • Some Things Change Everything: Amazon's Cloud Computing [View article]
Guess, cloud computing's all coming together and things falling into place because the tools (whether it's been around for quite some time already)have become ubiquitous and AWS came in and indeed became some sort of catalyst.

Not a concern that people will all be on board since it's like the gold rush; it doesn't guarantee success however. Again, only the innovative, cash-backed or lucky will be anointed.

No use being smart about clouds, nothing beats hindsight to be able to comprehend how it all pulled together.

  • On Setting Standards for Cloud Computing [View article]
    Well said, Jeff!

Motives aside, someone has got to do it (and I think waiting for user advocates will take much longer because truth is, they haven't really explored other cloud options - maybe because they haven't seen the need and are satisfied).

    Best.

  • Preparing for the Shift to Club Cloud Computing [View article]
Speaking of alliances, you haven't even touched the 'Open Cloud Manifesto' yet which sort of laid out a demarcation line on 'authority' more than the set of principles that it espouses.

  • Cloud Wars: Is There Room for Google and Microsoft? [View article]
Taking the meaning of the title of your post, Larry, the answer is a definite, yes. TO believe otherwise is to discount, not just the size of their coffers but also the huge resource they have on their hands to be able to get a huge chunk of the hyped technology.

Of course, this also applies to even the smaller players as cloud computing is very much 'still a suitor' with regards to widespread enterprise adoption.

    Best.

  • Platform Plays and Players: Signs of a Shakeout? [View article]
Given that proprietary gets that 'lock-in' rap, there is no denying that it provides the fastest way to efficiently creating an ecosystem around a particular product say a platform or OS for that matter because of the concept of single control. (As they say, too many cooks ...)

Whereas with Open Source, while leading itself to the choice & options concept (not to mention, deliberations) and no actual single authority to quickly raise the gavel of direction, appears to lag behind on the get go. But mind you, it has nothing to do with lack of expertise and players to support it (in fact on the contrary bec there's too many, whew). It may be the fact that the other participants needed to form the 'ecosystem' has difficulty arriving at a decision and adopting a wait n see attitude, thereby, not as agile as it would want for a certain product or service to get to critical mass of followers.

So can Open Source bridge that gap eventually? No doubt it can as Linux has done but at a cost that eats up revenue far more that it can generate at the short term ( lack of marketing machinery prolly).

Unfortunately, for innovative and promising yet small players, it's such a high price they can't afford to pay.

Long term is nice and often makes most sense but sadly, quick buck by way of latching to big name often rules the game.
