  • Long Term Investors Should Avoid Leveraged ETFs [View article]
What about dollar cost averaging in DDM? That seems to have been left out of the fancy math. Why not buy DDM now and continue to buy at different low points?

This discussion seems to argue that you buy a leveraged ETF once and hold it for the long term, never to buy shares again at any price lower than where you purchased it.

  • Mandatory Vaccination with Merck's Gardasil Raises Eyebrows [View article]
Well the same argument can be made on the adverse effects. How much does it cost to treat arthritis? Seizures? Remember Vioxx, Phen-Phen and a slew of other drugs that ended up killing people.

According to the news article, the drug was tested in 2000 people. 2000 out of 6 billion on the planet = 0%

  • Mandatory Vaccination with Merck's Gardasil Raises Eyebrows [View article]
The media seems to have jumped on the "religious nuts don't want sex vaccine" bandwagon but there is plenty of legitimate opposition to this drug.

Merck was the same company that brought us the Vioxx fiasco. Remember that?
What are the side effects of this drug? Does it have the potential to cause sterility? What other health effects is this going to have on young kids? Neurological damage? Seizures? (see link below)

The assumption seems to be that Gardasil is some type of magical cure with no ill effects.

If Merck is so eager to prevent cancer in women then why is it charging $500 for the vaccine? Why not make it free? Oh wait, the government and tax payers will pick up the tab for the bulk of the poor and insurance will cover the rest - now I get to pay even higher premiums!

  • REIT ETFs - Comparative Analysis [View article]
Part of the problem with VNQ vs. IYR is volume and options action. The volume and options for IYR are significantly higher and trading at a higher premium than VNQ. I assume many ETF investors out there are buying IYR for the yield (and security) and squeezing premiums via covered calls to earn extra return. If you factor those thing in, IYR is a much better deal even with higher expenses.

  • Toyota to Tackle Quality Concerns [View article]
There is a great irony with Toyota in my humble opinion. Toyota used to manufacture most of their cars in Japan and they were considered highest quality but they've recently moved more and more manufacturing to the US. I'm not sure if there is a correlation between the changes in production location and the increase in quality control issues but I am highly suspicious.

But it's also interesting to note that Hyundai is receiving many JD Powers awards for their car quality and none of their cars, to my knowledge, are manufactured here.

I would be curious which sets of cars, manufactured where were recalled and for what reasons.
