  • Managing A SeaDrill Collar With Ex-Dividend [View article]
Anyone notice the company has called an extraordinary meeting?
    What is that all about?

  • A bill introduced in Congress would have the government purchase and stockpile rare earths, making the metals available to Defense Department contractors. Roughly 5% of world rare earth use is for U.S. military purposes. MCP +5.5%, REE +9.0%, SHZ +4.7%, REMX +0.7%.  [View news story]
Hello? The concept is to have a supply of Rare Earth Elements so that IF we need the material for our weapons or industrial projects, the RE is there!
The demand for RE from the auto, aero and industrial sectors (to name a few), along with entities storing RE for speculation, (much like Gold), should send the material higher. The question is: What is the pure play (and verifiable production and storage) for RE?
There is a lot of guessing going on here!
MCP? SHZ? is there production yet from REE? Please advise, rare experts!

  • 3 Reasons Why Warren Buffett May Buy General Dynamics [View article]
I have reviewed the initial list of potential acquisitions by Berkshire, and considered General Dynamics. While you may be correct because of the fascination with planes, trains and automobiles by Buffett, did you consider the other players in this decision making? Does a war machine company fit into the model that his team (including the Gates Foundation Dynamic Duo who are "inheriting" the Oracle's Fortune) would support going forward? Is this Warren's decision to make on his own? Frankly, he may want to buy GD, and sell off the parts, keeping the small jet business for his NetJets Fleet development. This would be something that a man who can "walk on water" in the financial industry may be able to pull off with the regulators, making Berkshire another fortune by essentially being an arms dealer!
Meanwhile, the most logical acquisition would not be either GD or Colgate (although that stock could use a boost, and someone should buy them! Proctor, are you listening? Yes, its a Gamble, but you have the bucks. Do you have the fortitude?).
Look to the Insurance Business for the next big Bang in Acquisition:
    * TRV? No, they need to be acquired by Prudential or ? *Chubb? Who are they? -- Yes, CB is a candidate, but are they a good fit? There is a perfect fit for the GEICO brand, just sitting there waiting to be asked to the alter: *ALLSTATE! Yes, the "good hands" people need a hand. This would make GEICO clearly the leader in AUTO and Homeowners insurance. If the purchase could be made without Anti-Trust implications, it's a marriage made in Buffett Heaven!

  • Gold Resource Corp: The Power of Dividends [View article]
    Ian, Buck and Jack

I own several positions with major and junior gold miners, and also have some funds that have done very well at identifying potential "gems." I was actually pleased to see the review that you made, Ian - as I had just discovered GORO, and was beginning my own DD on the company. The challenge by Buck got us all thinking about the representations and credibility of the company, which is a good thing (right Jack? If you have so much experience as an investor in gold mining stocks, then you would be more gentle with folks like Buck. It is the height of arrogance to suggest someone else's "'arugments' are amateur" and you cannot "waste your time explaining the basics." Please -- save that b.s. for politics.). Meanwhile, I am still interested in buying this stock on a pullback. Ian, what would be a good entry level (I know, below 5 dollars! lol), and how do you hedge yourself on this potentially dangerous stock that turned over 146,000 shares today and has 403,000 shares of short interest (not that big a number when you realize there are over 49 million shares outstanding!)? We appreciate your input, Ian.

  • How My Top Ten 2009 Stock Picks Performed [View article]
Its great to have a forum on stock selection. I was looking at your 2010 list, and it seemed pretty familiar. Can you explain how you screened for the stocks you chose? Leaving out SMBL, you list
includes many stocks that Cramer recommends: AAPL, AMT, DIS, GILD, MCK,NFLX and VZ. Of course, BRK.B is the kind of stock that Cramer's "Action Alert" would buy.
Last year, you included several other Cramer picks of the past:
JNJ,HANS,MO,GLW,DE,ATVI and RIG. I am not sure if he ever commented on IMAX or DNDN, but he sure would have liked the results!
How is it that you decide on the stocks for your "top ten?"
