Should Microsoft Be Scared of ChromeOS? [View article]
> I'm usually a pessimist. I’m not when it comes to something like > ChromeOS your article clearly reads with a hyper pessimistic tone. The tone is clearly aimed at MSFT with your claim of discovering MSFT's destructor with GOOG being the keymaster. Google [like you] is making the petty mistake of trying to 'get' Microsoft. They should make the right decision to serve their markets rather than being so petty. Only computer geeks appreciate the drama regarding MSFT.

The tone behind MSFT's price is that OS's and Office Suites are the 1990's and the future is the browser. Even though this is false, the investment community clearly embraces it. The future is probably the 3 screens and a cloud story. MSFT's mobile software has the weakness of having to work on many phones and phone interfaces. AAPL's software has to run on only 1 device and its single interface, that is a short term advantage for AAPL. Because AAPL brags about the quantity of apps available for the iPhone, I would like to see S. Jobs yell: Developers, Developers, Developers. Obviously, both companies see the value of application development; nevertheless, AAPL's system is much more closed than MSFT's.

If SaAS was not going to take billions in loses to figure out, than it would be simple to duplicate. Windows Azure is an attempt to create hundreds of Salesforce.com ideas running on Azure [cloudless sky or sky blue] That is what "developers, developers, developers!!" was all about, and now we've tweaked it to something unforeseen but same train of thought aka Azure.

Yes, it is foresightful of MSFT to feed the developer community. It reflects the thoughts behind Ballmer's infamous developers, developers, developers rant. He was emotional and also correct in communicating the importance of the developer community to his audience.

It appears Google tried a December 7th and awoke a sleeping giant. It may be incorrect to say Google has a browser strategy because Google only has the browser. Microsoft appears to be trying the 'lock them in' strategy, this does create a lot of small needs to go unmet and gives rise to new competition. I hope Microsoft is not on its way to a new set of muscles that will be built and then cause weakness by protecting those new strengths. I hope Microsoft says they should build replacement offerings rather than wait for the competition to do the same.

Apple has an extremely powerful, yet very simple to program class hierarchy as a code base versus Microsoft that has a messy, hard-to-code, unreliable and excessively backwards-compatible bunch of cruft?

The best thing AAPL does is wake up MSFT. A MSFT executive was just recently quoted as saying: "It's fun competing!" That was an eye opening statement regarding the culture of MSFT that shows for a long time MSFT thought of itself as having little competition. An advantage MSFT has is MSFT is the only technical company that has the experience of dealing with the complexity and scale of their market share in the software world. It was the advantage IBM once had.

If Apple products are superior than why such a low price on their latest operating system? Clearly the premium price cannot be sustained due to alternative products are very similiar. Apple's new pricing strategy reflects the commoditization of Apple's offerings.
