  • How Many Companies Should I Own? [View instapost]
    A whopping 80,but that includes funds,reits,MLP's,and 1 BDC.
About half,I consider hold forever or near hold forever.
I realize the more holdings, the lesser chance I have in huge positive swings, that I am somewhat creating mediocrity.
Hopefully Im also creating safety and diversification.
Our smallest holdings are at $1k each.
Our largest holdings are $80k each <T and O>

  • Scanning The SA Family For Alpha: WmHilger1 [View article]
Since I am four years into the process,Im certainly not the expert on risk for DGI investing.
However in those four short years I have been burned badly reaching for yield, and specifically reaching for monthly yield.
My losses include LINE,LNCO <realized> and Im holding $25k in unrealized loss in VNR,and $8k in unrealized in BBEP.
I have hope for VNR,BBEP is close to worthless.
I will do some tax selling at the end of the year.

  • When The Gains And The Losses Balance Out [View instapost]
Like yourself I live off the dividends and small pension.
Unlike yourself I was not afforded the luxury of constructing a portfolio over time seeking great value.
I lost my job at age 55,began caring for my aging pop at that time.
My 4 portfolios have been constructed in 4 years time.
We are down more than 1% because we were heavy in oil and MLP's
I do have some capital gains to show this year with the mergers, special dividends, and some sales.
I will do a little tax selling of BBEP and VNR at years end to offset these gains.
Lesson learned, when I reach for yield and especially monthly yield,I get burned.

Keep your thoughts coming, your very helpful to me.

  • Retirement Strategy: The Phantom Fed Rate Hike And Dividend Growth Investing For Retirement [View article]
IMHO a interest rate increase has already been factored into this market.
Any delay only creates more opportunity.
Wouldnt shock me to see the dow bounce back up to around 18k.
We will once again have to deal with rising rate worries first quarter of next year.
    Just my opinion...

  • Is Your 'Safe' Income Stream Really All That Safe? [View article]

Back in 07,pre crash,I was 100% mutual funds.
When the market began to tank,I felt my professional money managers would save my funds from sinking.
After all,I had picked strong funds with high ratings and great fund managers.
    NOT !
My funds sank just like the rest of the market.
At that point I realized,it was time to do it myself.
I still own funds, but they have become supporting players to my all stars.
Its not always easy to tune out the noise, when day after day you see your portfolio drop 5 or 10 k,but I just sing fa la la la la,and cash those divvy checks.

  • A Review Of All My Portfolios: DGI, Retirement And Other Investments [View article]
We have 82 different holdings, spread over 4 different types of accounts.
Of the 82,about half are hold forever,so I dont sweat the daily noise.
I realize we may never hit a home run this way,but safety first helps me sleep well at night.

  • PepsiCo Looks Like It Is Heading Lower [View article]
I have a cousin who charts everything.
    He is a tech wiz.
He can quote you alpha,beta,yada,yada,d... cross, fire ring, fox trot, and about any technical analysis you can think of.
He became very angry at me for not having all of this knowledge before I invest.
Yet year after year,my portfolio outperformed his.
He no longer speaks to me.
IMHO,any company that is well run,<PEP,PM,etc> that shows strong valuation, but has a depressed stock price because of the STRONG dollar is a STRONG BUY.
Oil will not remain low forever and the dollar will not remain forever strong.
    Just my opinion.

  • Realty Income: A Well-Timed Equity Offering For This 5% Yielder [View article]
Obviously they are raising cash now to buy more properties and or possibly expand by take over.
My main worry about O is,will they be able to maintain their outstanding business model and plan ?
At what point does becoming larger hamper rather than help ?
Bigger is not always better, and of course could lead to empty buildings.
My gut feeling tells me they will obtain properties outside the USA.
