  • Apple Inc. Shares Are Likely Dead Money For The Balance Of Its Fiscal Year [View article]
Regarding your comment about the 14% decrease in sales of iPads, you mention that other manufacturers must be taking away market share from AAPL.

I'd point out that MSFT just had a nearly $1 billion write-down on its Surface inventories.

I doubt that the 14% decrease in sales is due to competition, but more likely due to AAPL's product cycle; everyone is waiting for updated version of the iPad. The current version is a bit long in the tooth.

  • Audio tech providers Dolby (DLB -6.1%) and (especially) DTS (DTSI -25.3%) are getting hammered after posting their calendar Q3 reports (I, II). Citing a "softening near-term business environment," DTS is guiding for 2012 revenue of $100M-$105M and 2013 revenue of $140M-$150M, below a consensus of $110.1M and $160.2M. Dolby beat estimates thanks to smartphone/tablet deals and provided in-line FQ1 and FY13 guidance. But it mentioned on its earnings call FQ4 PC sales fell 6% Y/Y, and consumer electronics sales 10%. [View news story]

  • "We don’t really see a way to do same-day delivery on a broad scale economically," says Amazon's CFO during his company's Q2 earnings call, addressing speculation on the subject. Same-day delivery or not, capex rose 70% Q/Q to $657M, and will reach $800M-$900M in Q3. The needs of Amazon Web Services are a big reason why. International growth fell to 22% Y/Y from Q1's 31%, but the Street is pleased gross margin rose 210 bps Q/Q to 26.1%, a 9-year high. AMZN +0.9% AH. (more)  [View news story]

  • Ethanol producers aren’t having a good summer, as record corn prices and sluggish gasoline demand squeeze profits. Valero (VLO) and others have idled plants since mid-June, and Archer Daniels Midland's (ADM) ethanol margins have eroded to a loss of more than $0.20/gallon. Ethanol production in the week through July 20 fell to 796B bbl/day, hitting a record low for the second straight week.  [View news story]
Yet another sign that ethanol (at least corn based) is not a sustainable solution. The idea had good intentions, but it doesn't work in reality.

  • Wedge Partners' Brian Blair tells Apple (AAPL -0.4%) investors to stay on the sidelines until the company releases its FQ2 report. Blair is worried new iPad sales will miss the Street's high expectations in spite of a strong opening week, noting Apple Stores have ample supplies. Moreover, he now thinks 2012 iPad shipments will likely be at the low end of a forecast range of 56M-60M. A Chinese site recently reported Apple has slashed production of new iPads.  [View news story]

I can't see many opportunities costing $100 billion, but who knows! Tim Cook seems to like Facebook, as he mentioned at the meeting. Seems like AAPL has just the right amount of cash to make an acquisition!
