  • On Social Media and Churn [View article]
The other issue not explored is that Facebook typically has much higher conversion rates for campaigns than most social media. With countries such as Australia having 7.7 million out of 21 million log into Facebook atleast once a month, thats a huge market.

So while not as many might be quitting Facebook as Twitter, they still might not be using at much as advertisers would like.

  • Why the FCC Wants to Smash Open the iPhone [View article]
While this might be more of a future Google/Apple fight, it does have some valid points as Apple disclosing around the approval process

#5 prohibited applications or of categories of applications

This holds value for future applications and developers. But why stop a useful call management app such as Google Voice, which users should be able to access through Safari anyway from being an app. They are just making the process of accessing the app for difficult for users.

But I guess the Apple process is fairly tough its not as if they have let thru applications such as "baby shaker"

  • Google's Ad-Sales Reporting Is the Real Newspaper Killer [View article]
Great article, im wondering if that is just limited to particular geographic or industry verticals. I agree that customers love to see any promotional or advertising material from Google but is this a one off promotion?

It could be useful as part of an quarterly or yearly review, but does this add another layer of cost to what is a very efficient and effective online only model?

  • YouTube Reports Exponential Growth: Issues Viral Video Challenge [View article]
I do like the ability of the new iPhone 3Gs that enables you to record a video, edit and upload direct to your YouTube account. This feature has some great potential for video bloggers and breaking news stories.

This simple feature is going to be useful to bloggers such as Perez Hilton, who can beat traditional media outlets. I hope that it is going to be used by more than just drunken friends but can see some great viral video campaigns being started by this new iPhone feature.

  • Real-Time Search: How to Capture Consciousness [View article]
Great focus, based on what I have read OneRiot seems to have the support of the social community and its PulseRank product has the ability to limit how spammers can influence and ride the breaking news stories.

Im not sure about Twitters new verified profiles and how they will have an affect on their influence and how they show up in real-time search.

Based on a the recent coverage around Michael Jackson death, the tweets from celebrities who knew him even such as everyone's favourite tweeter Ashton Kutcher would likely be a better source than your local tv station who is just re-hashing the news feeds off CNN or AP...

  • Judge Posner's Dangerous Thinking on Links and the Future of News [View article]
Is it more along the lines of when Music companies tried to prevent users from making mp3 version of their music. Sony installed software that added Malware to the users PC to try and prevent this, now Sony sells walkman mobile phones that you can load with your own mp3s.

If I write something of value, its great when someone comments but if someone writes a story about it and includes a link I get benefit. It will be the case that writers and bloggers will just remove the level of transperancy and will no longer quote the source if The New York Times is going to be looking for their content they wont quote or link to them.

If I read a story by a industry blog or newspaper and want to do a blog post on it, I should be able to. The large newspaper groups dont control the media as much as they used to and that is more the issue they are having a temper tantrum.

So in the end the NYT is going loose strenght online and blogs will start to be the ones getting all the benefit as they understand linking. The legal system struggles to understand normal business how can they try and weigh in on complex matters such as Links/Content?

  • Tough Times at Salesforce.com [View article]
i think one of their biggest issues is that ive got a few of my clients onto their system but most people think its a fortune, they need to stop chasing large corporate clients and communicate that a SME can get a single license for $99/year...

its a great solution, but they just dont advertise the price... in a down market price is everything....
