  • 2 Railroad Stocks Set To Profit On Mississippi River [View article]
I enjoyed reading the article very much.

One comment I would offer surrounds the degree to which this diversion in shipping methods would actually affect the price of the respective stocks mentioned.

That is, I would think an enormous diversion is required to move the prices significantly.

For that reason, railroads like CSX may prove to be better long term investments in this sector, due to more attractive valuations.

Thanks again for the interesting article.

Great article. The discussion on coal aside, how much more can CSX improve its operating ratio given the scenario of declining sales?

I hold CNI (CNR on the TSX) and CSX.

Why are you watching CSX over NSC?

    Great article. Thanks.

  • Research In Motion (RIMM +2.6%) is counting on BlackBerry 10's multitasking features to help it succeed as a "third ecosystem." "What we’re trying to do is streamline [the multitasking] process, break down the silos that exist between a lot of those applications," says exec Jeff Gadway. Also central to RIM's strategy is its $10K guarantee for BB10 developers who generate at least $1K in sales - that gambit seems necessary in light of the huge lead Android and iOS will have in available apps. Herr Hansa, I think you summed up the entire discussion in one very concise, succinct, and elegant sentence.

"..... even a small percentage of a very large global smartphone market can be profitable, if a company is lean and efficient."

  • Halliburton (HAL +1.2%) is cut to Neutral from Buy with a $38 target price (down from $40) at Global Hunter, which notes the change in strategy if production slows "likely mitigates pumping margins from getting materially worse. [But] there will be close to a million horsepower collectively sitting in yards across NAM, and thus the road to recovery in pricing is a long ways off." [View news story]

  • What the Fed did last week has altered the way investors will need to look at the economy going forward, says Goldman's Jim O'Neill. The Fed has always had a measured approach to its dual mandate for both price stability and full employment, but its apparent now that's all changed. The focus now is far heavier on jobs than it is worrying about the inflation that critics worry QE will cause, O'Neill says. "QE infinity," as he calls it, is a sort of "shock-and-awe" move that's changed the balance of everything. [View news story]

  • Dahlman Rose downgrades eastern rails CSX (CSX -2%) and Norfolk Southern (NSC -1.5%) to Hold (I, II) on concerns that export met coal price declines could pressure volume and pricing. • Video and pictures leak of the first BlackBerry 10 smartphone. Called the L-Series (the phone was previously codenamed London), the device is shown sporting an icon-based interface similar to iOS and Android. Research In Motion (RIMM) is expected to launch its delayed BB10 hardware early next year, after a flurry of Windows Phone 8 devices arrive on the scene this fall. [View news story]
I think RIM has many ways they can take the company. The question seems to be whether or not they have enough time to fix it.
