  • "We can't just drill our way to lower gas prices when we consume 20% of the world's oil," President Obama says during his weekly address. Obama took the opportunity to advocate for his "all of the above" strategy, that relies less on foreign fossil fuels, and more on: "solar, wind, natural gas, biofuels, and more."  [View news story]
He should have went on to suggest that America stop drilling completely and destroy all the wells. That should get the price of gas down nicely.

  • Not only is further stimulus off the table, but the Fed is likely to emerge from next week's policy meeting with a slightly more upbeat view of the economy, reports Jon Hilsenrath. The fast decline in unemployment has taken Fed officials by surprise, and it could mean more underlying strength in the economy than other data would indicate.  [View news story]
I think Bernanke is scared and doesn't know what to do. You can tell by looking at him that he's afraid.

  • ECRI Reaffirms Recession Call [View article]
I think we will invade Iran soon. I've had a lot of employees being called into active duty and/or extended military training lately. That happened in the past in advance of invading Afghanistan and Iraq. Something's coming, just a question of when.

  • ECRI Reaffirms Recession Call [View article]
Our family is already cutting back on other things due to the price of gas.
Fact is, everyone cuts back as gas goes up. There is no other choice, you either cut back on spending or saving. Money spent on gas cannot also be spent on something else.

  • Wendy's: Why This Fast Casual Turnaround Story Has Insiders Buying [View article]
Why don't they just copy MCD- good selection on the dollar menu, fast service, happy meals, playground for the kids, and all those awesome coffees MCD has?

The MCD dollar menu has things for $1.00. I don't want to see anything on the "dollar" menu for $1.19, $1.29, $1.39, etc. And I don't want a frosty the size of a thimble either. I actually got one of those about six months ago- they called it a Jr. Frosty. I figured I was buying a "small", but it was so tiny my whole family started laughing when it was placed on my tray. I was like "what the HELL is THAT???". It was entertaining for my Facebook friends when I posted a picture of the tiny little thimble cup.

Not sure what to say about breakfast. I don't think of WEN or Burger King for breakfast. I think of MCD (awesome coffee) and Hardees (great biscuits). To succeed WEN will need some attention getting ads and some awesome coffee.

And it's true that service is slow at WEN. I've often wondered why they don't just copy the MCD kitchen processes, cashiers, etc. Don't sit around trying to think of something new- just copy the one who has already figured it out.

  • Fall Back Friday: Greece Not Yet Fixed [View article]
A world-wide superbug would help get those unemployment numbers down nicely. Maybe that's just part of the plan in Greece.

  • With 243,000 jobs created in January, the economy is starting to look more positive, which might be a big plus for Pres. Obama in the November election. Current forecasts for labor growth point toward an extremely close election, Nate Silver writes - one in which every monthly fluctuation above or below a threshold of 150K jobs created could matter.  [View news story]
The inventory at my local GM dealer is so low it looks like something out of a zombie movie. I drive by and I wonder "where did all the people go?" Tumble weeds rolling around in the lot and a coyote hiding behind a lonely Volt. Salespeople looking outside the windows like kids wanting someone to come play with them.

Sort of like having the Three Stooges try to fix a leaky pipe in your home. Next thing you know you have tools and pipes all over the place and your house is flooded.

Yes, that's what I meant. We had out doubts that McCain could beat Obama, then he picked Palin for VP and we all knew any hope he had was gone at that point. Hopefully Romney/Gingrich will pick a better running mate this time.

  • Update: U.S. Unemployment Rises To 12.2% [View article]
I wonder if all those real people out there who do not have a job are feeling the same bullish euphoria as the traders who believe Friday's BS employment numbers? I'm guessing that if they didn't have a job on Thursday, they probably didn't suddenly get a job at 8:30 on Friday, and they probably aren't too happy about the situation.

  • Jobs Report Is A Sucker-Punch To Pessimists [View article]
Very true. I hire Correctional Officers. Very few people actually "like" this type of work. In good times it was always a struggle to find applicants and our vacancies were always high. Now, I have all the positions filled with about 100 applicants on a waiting list. All I have to do is pick up the phone and call one and he/she will be there as soon as I tell them to be there for an interview. No one is leaving for other employment either. No one. For a while last year we had a few leaving every now and then, but now- zero. I hired someone recently who had been making $100K/year and is now settling for less than $30K. Lots of other stories like that. People are desperate. There just aren't jobs out there. The employment report is just smoke and mirrors to win an election. It's just a question of whether that show can go on long enough to win the election or will we all notice that the Wizard of Oz is really just a guy behind the curtain.

I think there is optimism that Obama will lose the election. If it starts looking like he will win, the economy and stock market goes right back into the toilet just like it did in 2008.

  • Is The Economy Getting Ready To Shift Into Overdrive? [View article]
The data is always good until it isn't good anymore. I don't think it will last going forward. I think the next big problem will be something relating to Iran and the high fuel prices that will ensue. Gas prices are already starting to strangle the consumers. This will start showing up in the economic data soon. It'll only get worse if oil goes up more.
