The API leads people to create links to NYTimes.com, and that increases pageviews on NYTimes.com both directly (when users click on the links) and indirectly (through SEO benefits). But beyond the pageviews, it will hopefully help make NYTimes.com central to news applications in the way that the Google Maps API made Google central to mapping applications.
