AA is a no touch stock right now. There are too many unknown on the proposed split. AA has been as low as $5 and as high as $48 in last 8 years. It behaves as a commodity stock and will do so until more clarity is given on the split. That means a lot of volatility and correlation to aluminum pricing. A world slowdown does not bode well for aluminum right now.

More downside than upside, I think. Reduction in EPS not yet reflected in stock prices

Sell the bounce seems to be the word of the day. Apple at record iPhone sales is stalled out at $98. Next quarter will not be as good so price can only go down. Fed minutes may be dovish but dollar is hanging in at a strong 1.088. Still best place to be in a weak world economy. S&P bounced nicely above 1900 but I believe it will test 1800 before the month is done.

Pre market decoupling only, people looking for bargains while smart money is exiting their positions. I think you will see a big drop in US markets today after the open.

AA is a trade but not long term play. China dumping could keep aluminum down for a long time. World economy would have to grow above 3.5% for Ted to turn and ships to rise. Don't see that happening in the near future. Yes at $6 it is a buy but not a hold for long term.

Quiet start to a Volatile week. Oil and its permutations will be the lead to market moves. Lasts week stock rally may have been short covering. AA down to $6 something, scary.

It will be thin trades today due to weather so market may overshoot up or down. Don't get sucked in! take a day of. Next week will be more telling. Good if we finish above 1950 bad if we drop through 1867

Oil still declining and selling pressure will increase today. Any bounce from shorts covering will be sold hard. No one wants to hold securities going into the weekend with China down another 3.5%. Europe is up because of possible announcement at 8:30. When that does not happen they will reverse course also. Yes this is short term trading but one does what one must to protect the portfolio now.

  • Take Advantage Of The Sell-Off: Buy Alcoa  [View article]
It is insane but sentiment is negative in the marketplace which means stock price could go lower substantially. Wait for some turnaround in China or world economy and then buy. I see price somewhere over $10 of negative senti, net goes away.

Yes that is the the theory. Are you buying AA because of it? 2 halves are: Value added worth $11/share and primary worth -$5/share, but since stock can't go negative it will be worth something, right? I am not buying it.

If global economies are slowing down why will alumina price be going up? I disagree with Claus I don't see any rise in prices till we see world growth above 3%. AA split is just a Ponzi scheme, you can't split a mature company and expect it to be worth more than it was before. Yes speculators can bid it up but book value is divided into 2 and that is what it is unless there is substantial growth. AA is not growing it is shrinking. At $6.90 it looks like a bargain but it has been down to $5 before so be careful.

  • Wall Street Breakfast: China Records Slowest Growth In 25 Years  [View article]
China growth 6.9? Who knows maybe this is 3.9? The numbers are not accurate and if Shanghai investors expect more stimulus then I believe that the number is closer to 3 than 7%. Why are the rest of the world markets going up? In concert with Shanghai stocks, but when the 2nd largest economy is slowing down and the dollar is strong this spells LOWER EARNINGS for US companies. Yes I see a bounce with a sell later today or later in the week, EPS is still high. Slowing economies mean less demand for commodities (oil, steel, aluminum), which means lower prices for the likes of AA (now in the $6 range). Banks may be making a profit but our industrial sector is hurting badly and will drive the S&P down in this quarter.

Friday is sell day and I see 39% chance that we will rip through August lows on SPX. Contributing factors, GS fine (but no one goes to jail?), oil under 30 and jitters holding equities over the long weekend.
