What legislation is pending to ban semi-automatic rifles? How would a ban on the same put buying in a downward swing?

  • Stop worrying about the election, the fiscal cliff or the state of the economy for that matter, advises John Bogle. Investors need to stay focused on the long haul, regardless of market conditions, Bogle says. Good business will survive, so focus on investing rather than speculating. “Get out of the casino, own corporate America and hold it forever.” [View news story]
The markets are doing great, profits are incredible, yet everyone wants him out office. Sorry, but we are doing well and I don't think I am greatest investor in the world, so, I hope he gets to stay so I can have another 4 years like this.

Did he consider it a success? How would we know that, he is dead and gave no interviews or left any recording that we know of at any rate.

There is a nitwit English teacher on every board, especially this one because proper spelling and correct word usage is important for communication and it truly is not that hard and takes no time to accomplish.

Honestly, I read the first comment and did not realize the author meant "their" and was struggling to understand what he meant by the comment.

  • Hostess Brands received first-round bids from Wal-Mart (WMT +0.4%) and Kroger (KR -0.7%) for its assets, according to Bloomberg. Earlier reports suggested close to one hundred bids in total were received for the company's arsenal of well-known snack brands. [View news story]
I think comparing Hostess to GM is really rather disingenuous. I mean 15,000 workers compared to the literally millions that would have been affected or simply thrown out of work had GM collapsed? Is such a comparison really even possible?

Not saying that GM had to be saved, just that your basis for comparison is apples to raisins in scale and scope is all.

  • Chesapeake Energy (CHK) avoided any fines related to a drilling accident in Wyoming last year that resulted in residential evacuations and the release of pollutants into the environment. Some residents are unhappy with the light treatment, but the head of the state agency responsible for overseeing oil and gas drilling says "accidents will happen." [View news story]
Maybe if we would punish these companies like we punish drug users, they wouldn't be so cavalier when things go down the crapper.

  • A double-take is necessary to believe some of the handles in the mREIT sector, undergoing another savage selloff as the Fed hints at even more QE. The pure-agency REITs - in direct competition with the Fed for paper - are hit hardest. AGNC -3.4%, ARR -8.1%, CMO -4.9%, WMC -7.1%, to name a few. [View news story]
You know it. I am looking all over trying to find the money to put into all three with an eye down the road, and not even that far I should think looking at the drubbing they are taking right now.

  • Individuals and their families have squirreled away $21-32T of financial assets in offshore tax havens, a study conducted for pressure group Tax Justice Network shows. That represents up to $280B in lost global income tax.  [View news story]
The Silk Road was a path, for the most part unimproved and traversable by mule and horse. Folks like you are the first to complain when the road is closed, when the watermain breaks, or when the stoplight is off, but you also complain the loudest that you have to pay taxes to maintain the same.

I agree and have to wonder, additionally, what was in the returns he provided to McCain that made McCain turn away from him?

If we get the answer to that question, we will understand why we don't want him in the Oval Office.

lol I did for a second, but then I am the same fellow that for a year drove past a sign for Roaster Road and read the darned thing RO(long O)aster Road. Not that I can't read mind you, but that my mind had already made up what it was going to see.

So yes, I did wonder what the hell he meant for a second.

  • Republican House Speaker John Boehner says he’s not sure Congress and President Obama can reach a deal to avoid the fiscal cliff. “I’m not confident at all,” Boehner quips. It may just be electioneering by the Republicans to keep the heat on the President going into October, but it's risky banter with a resolution already priced into the markets - like we have right now. [View news story]
He does not take credit, he very pointedly makes the point that it was the sailors that get the credit, they took the risks. He states that his, while not easy, was indeed the easy part, ordering the mission to go ahead.

That is not taking credit, that is giving credit where credit is due. Might also be a mark of a good leader too, if you think about it.

  • Corn Yield Estimate Likely To Drop Further [View article]
Corn for feed and corn for ethanol are the same, but corn for much of human consumption is not. Try to sell Kellogg feed corn for corn flakes, in short, you can't. In the 70's we raised corn for Kellogg, it was a special corn that they requested specifically for their uses. I presume other human food producers do the same.

Canned corn and frozen corn for human consumption is a different corn too. Cheaper to grow a sweeter corn than to add considerably more sweeteners to make it palatable for humans.
