  • If you can't beat 'em, hire 'em. Apple (AAPL), stung by the flare-up over iOS 6 Maps, is reportedly aggressively recruiting ex-Google Maps (GOOG) employees who helped build up the product's giant data libraries. Meanwhile, a Google product manager tells TechCrunch the company relies on 1,300 data sources to make Google Maps, and integrates them all using a proprietary system called Atlas. [View news story]

  • U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh has granted Apple (AAPL) a preliminary injunction on U.S. sales of Samsung's (SSNLF.PK) Galaxy Nexus phone, which it co-developed with Google (GOOG). The ruling comes two days after a preliminary injunction was granted on sales of Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1. A recent William Blair report claimed the Galaxy Nexus has been Verizon's #3 phone in June. An Apple patent covering unified voice and text search drew the injunction.  [View news story]

  • Google Nexus 7 Tablet Targets Apple, Amazon, Microsoft [View article]
Apple should have already been prepared to beat any competitor to the punch with a 7" version. Google, like Amazon, already has the advantage of not having to care about making a profit on the device, the core of their business doesn't lie in devices.

  • Google Nexus 7 Tablet Targets Apple, Amazon, Microsoft [View article]
I think Google was originally hoping for the OEMs to forge the way for them like what occurred with smartphones. It was obvious that the OEMs failed, so Google is attempting to take it upon itself to build up this end of the business. They see Apple capitalizing on the halo effect between phones and tablets, and want this for their platform.

  • Two new tablet rumors reported by Digitimes: 1) Google (GOOG) will follow up on the launch of the Nexus 7 tablet by introducing a 10" model that uses touch panels from AU Optronics (AUO) and Wintek (this sounds believable, particularly given the Nexus 7's name). 2) A Chinese-language site claims Apple (AAPL) will introduce a new 9.7" iPad in summer that will be thinner and feature better battery life than the latest iPad (harder to believe, given the historical pace of iOS product launches).  [View news story]
It will be interesting to see what ideas Apple has for a follow up iPad next spring. The charging system needs a major upgrade. They also sure could use USB ports and memory expansion, but they seem philosophically against these things for some reason.

"I mean come on, kill the #1 platform and then you don't have anything to deliver for like more than a year? Who would do that?"
