Verizon's Droid Is the Real Deal

I don't think Apple has that much to worry about. This is about Verizon needing a phone to compete with Apple but at the same time, it eliminates the one thing holding Verizon customers from leaving to go to AT&T, which is the bogus claim that Verizon is getting the iPhone. Now that this officially proves no iPhone for Verizon, the people leaving Verizon will be huge.

As for the phone, Motorola is old tech. Their moment in the sun is past, kind of like Palm. The real company that will hurt from this is Rimm which will see this phone be the number one pushed phone on Verizon instead of Rimm's blackberries. I would stay long AAPL while short Rimm as a good pair trade.

So they toss out the old sure press for true press. How does this affect the development of apps. My guess is storm2 is one more phone in Rimm's growing phone inventory which divides developers and consumers from products based on which handset they get. Meanwhile apple has one form factor for the phone and the touch which results in one development that reaches almost 50 million devices.

RImm needs to get to one or 2 phone forms or the developers will never make anything good apps.

Market Remains Bullish, But at a Price

As someone who has been long apple for years, the stock is up 30 points in the last month without a pause. The news flow on Apple is all positive and the rumour mill is in full force (china, tablet, etc.) I sold all my apple last week but kept the calls I wrote to make a few dollars as it drifts lower. Long term apple is a great stock, just not really a good trade at $165. The China news may be a catalyst but this is so widespread on news sites and blogs that I would argue that China is kind of priced in right now.

I would pick Rimm and AMZN as better short canidates than Apple but all of these stocks have been too hot as of late. Heck even SBUX is up 80% recently. Is the coffee biz that good as of late. My wait or lack of wait at SBUX is unchanged so this move is not sustainable either.

AT&T, Apple Can't Win Fight Against VoIP

Steve Jobs has said that the telecoms are just dumb pipes. Apple should have no opposition to VOIP, but the telcos do. Google has a seat on Apple's board. I would think Apple knows what Google is doing and the rejection will start a firestorm and a possible ruling that VOIP is allowed. Then Google and Apple both win while the telcos lose. Never underestimate Jobs ability to negotiate with unconventional methods. Remember that Apple talked to Verizon about the iphone but they would have never done a deal with Verizon. This was needed to get AT&T to pay thru the nose.

Think most of you all miss the point. Let us look at last quarters earnings.

Dell $290 million
Apple $1.23 billion

Which company would you rather own.

Throw in Rimm which made $643 million

If Apple counted the iphone sales like Rimm did then Apple earnings would be 1.94 billion in one quarter

Hp only made 1.7 billion

Interesting but in the phone space wouldn't you be better off shorting Rimm which only does phones and is feeling the heat from Apple, Palm, Nokia and all the other wanna be phone makers putting a keyboard on a phone.

Apple at least has an ecosystem of music players, phones and computers which all work together. What does Rimm and Nokia have - phones?

It will be great to see a busy Apple store next to a near empty Microsoft store. How long is MSFT going to let that last.

Jobs: Catch the App Store if You Can

The telcos are pipes on which they collect an access toll. That pays for their pipes, repairs, etc. The idea that they get to control what you do, what internet you can see, what apps you can use, and what music to listen to is a dumb idea. Apple, the movie company the app developers control this area. This is why cable tv is a dead end biz. The internet movie delivery over tivo, amazon, apple itunes are crushing that dumb pipe as well. They need to figure out how to make money running the pipe and quit worrying about how much money apple, rimm or nokia is making.

When Apple adds a video camera to the iPod Touch this year with a better camera, the iPod Touch will be the hottest mobile gaming, mobile internet device and flip video camera on the market. The poor lemmings on Verizon and Sprint buy iPod touches to use for everything but phone calls. They want apps which they can't get with the crappy phones. Once they get the Touch it is only a matter of time before they get the iPhone and one gadget in the pocket instead of phone, ipod, camera, PSP, etc. all sharing the same pocket.

Will Dell Succeed with New Device? Doubtful

How is a generic box maker going to make an innovative mobile internet device. The answer is poorly or not at all. Since I am short Dell all I can hope for is that they make this attempt or buy Palm. Either way it is a bloodbath for Dell shareholders. Michael Dell could make generic PCs in his dorm room but what else has he done. PC box making is moving to China and Dell has no value add to the consumer. Why buy a dell when you can buy some generic PC like an Acer for cheaper.

And at the Gartner Symposium and ITxpo97 here today, the CEO of competitor Dell Computer added his voice to the chorus when asked what could be done to fix the Mac maker. His solution was a drastic one.
"What would I do? I'd shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders," Michael Dell said before a crowd of several thousand IT executives.

PS: Hay Mikey, Please give the money you currently have back to the shareholders as soon as possible. Steve Jobs must laugh at Michael Dell's half ass quote every day.

why are different form factors so important. For software developers they are a nightmare as you have to write your app numerous times or just don't support some models.

Apple - 1 form factor with 40 milliion iphones and ipod touches which means one consistent platform.

Rimm is old tech. A pager company evolves into a phone maker whose main function is email. 2 years ago if you wanted email you needed a blackberry. Now tons of phones do email and now the web, which Rimm does not do well. Apple crushes Rimm in use of the internet on devices so Rimm is now behind the curve.

Unless Rimm can migrate their phone into a mini computer like Apple they are soon to be roadkill.

I loved all the excitement that Rimm is moving into China. Apple has a touch keyboard that can adapt for use in China. Are the Chinese going to text in English on their blackberry and then translate it into Chinese. How do you text OMG and LMAO in Chinese. The answer on the blackberry is English only which means no penetration in China except multinational types.

Apple Steals Palm's Thunder, RIM's Too?

The lower iPhone cost crushes Rimm's consumer push. Rimm will now have to drop their prices even further thus destroying their margins. Apple has the biggest MID (mobile internet device) platform at 40 million devices running one OS. That means more apps, more stickiness and reluctance to switch away. Rimm may keep their business customers but the added iPhone use of Exchange is cutting into the Rimm model. Plus Apple is building a billion dollar server farm in North Carolina - to put the big squeeze on Rimm's business.

Preview of Palm's Pre: Being Good Is Not Always Good Enough

Anyone see the demo on the Thestreeet.com today on the Pre. The guy went to cut on Pandora and it took so long he said you can change to the web to read a page while you wait for the program to load in order to be more productive. LOL

On another demo on another site a guy using the Pre was showing synergy and accidentally dialed a person's number and it took him almost 15 seconds to cancel the call and get back to where he used to be which is pretty laughable as well.
