Crazylegs - I saw my first zune yesterday being used by a person. No social there. You can say what you want but Apple is crushing the competition. If they weren't would Verizon really need to give you a free blackberry when you buy one. Talk about Margin Compression for Rimm. Dell needs a phone yet the carriers reject their proposed phone (LOL), MSFT is all about vaporware. Please stick with us we promise to come out with something cool some day - really. Sony may be reduced to a niche player in consumer electronics since we only have BBY and WMT left. At least Apple has their own stores.

His basis is that the "The Zune is a great bit of kit" which we all know is rubbish. Thus from the author's dim view, MSFT should be the best since they are the biggest. In autos, GM was the biggest yet they never made great cars. Android will be hampered by too many different handsets and a fight over the app marketplace - carrier, google or handset maker or all 3. Nintendo and Rimm is a laugher. That would destroy Rimm which is doing a good job of that to itself. Dell might buy Rimm which I hope happens since I am short Rimm and Dell, that marriage would definitely fail miserably.

Face it - the cell phone business was a dud. Rimm had an email machine that played brickbreaker (wow). Then Apple enters the market, everyone laughs, the phone begins to sell and then everyone says crap we need to do something. If the MSFT RIMM and others could not innovate before Apple how are they going to do it now.

Lastly, Apple should buy Sony and "become a world class consumer electronics company overnight." Where is the author hiding - under a rock. Apple is the premier consumer electronics company. I have Sony TVs but that is the only thing I would buy from Sony. Apple could easily make TVs. I did buy a Sony touchscreen camera which got the screen scratched first time in the pocket with keys. You can put your iphone in your pocket with keys and nothing happens.

Thus Apple should continue being Apple while the others pray that Apple runs out of ideas.

Who, BMW could make a $10,000 car but they won't, so why should apple. Better computer with better software so you pay more. Kind of like buying a great car versus the cheapest one you can find.

bigeasy8 is right. MSFT is a ship without a rudder. GRMN is being crushed by phones with GPS. AAPL is the best pick on this list. Best thing on this article was the absence of RIMM and DELL. 2 companies that are struggling and may not be around in the next five years.

Microsoft Retail Effort: Don't Try to be Apple Cool

They hire a guy who is from Walmart. Ever been in a Walmart, they are stuffed to the gills, hard to navigate, customer service is a joke, and the lure is prices. You don't go to Walmart for the quality shopping experience. If they had it, Target would be out of business.

I see MSFT jamming everything they have ever made into a cramped space. What computers are they going to use. If they choose HP Dell will be mad. MSFT needs the generic box makers behind them not against them. The box makers got screwed on Vista and they could start backing linux big if MSFT does anything else wrong.

I think MSFT is a good short here as they have lost their focus. It seems that Balmers plan is to lick his finger see which the wind blows and try to go that way. Problem is Apple and other companies can shifting the wind and MSFT thus keeps walking in circles.

They handily beat guidance after preannouncing that they would miss the original estimate. That is 3 quarters in a row of missed earnings. The new phones are problematic (Storm), too expnsive (the bold) and sold thru a third tier carrier (the flip). Apple has one phone with two memory sizes. Rimm has about 20 phones and there is the problem. One giant company with people working on one phone as a platform and one smaller company trying to keep 20 phones going.

Who Will Win the Home Entertainment Battle?

The author assumes Apple TV is only good for streaming paid movies and tv. Uses for Apple TV that the author does not understand.

1. Connects your home entertainment center to iTunes. Now you can stream over the air or by wire your entire iTunes library to your tv/surround system. Do people still have stereos?

2. Allows for all of your photo libraries to be used as a screen saver while music is playing. Everyone that has ever seen this asks how we do it.

3. You can play all of your movies and tv shows that are in itunes.

4. You can watch content that you load into iTunes such as DVD's, tivo recordings, etc.

5. You tube on the Tv. Kids love this.

6. You iPhone becomes your remote.

Call it a flop if you want but it is a neat device for certain uses, just like a tivo is a great dvr if you want a dvr. A dvd would be nice but why buy a dvd when you can buy the movie in Itunes. Lastly, why buy dvd's period unless they are kid movies. Are you really going to watch Superbad 10 times on a dvd when you could tape it to your dvr or computer for free.

The Google Phone: Blockbuster or Bust?

The Gphone is 3g but Tmobile only has 3G in 27 cities. Not a lot of coverage. I went in a tmobile store today and the girl I spoke with did not even know about the phone. One guy did but he told me that they did not have a demo and you could only preorder it.

Gary Krakow loves the gPhone but he tends to hate the iPhone. Heck he even thinks that the new Storm is faster than the iPhone. I think this is all just chatter. Apple has had a year and a quarter to refine their phone which is why it is Apple phone software 2.1. All the others are 1.0 phones. Who wants to beta test the Gphone or the Storm when the Apple phone has been revised with a second model and about 6 software updates. Not me. Sticking with the original iPhone for now.

Research In Motion: Expectations Running High

Rimm may have a lock on the enterprise but last quarter over 50% of their new subs were consumers. The new iphone will put a big dent in the consumer sales of Rimm phones. Why else would rimm be advertising the on tv about their phones if they weren't worried about the iphone.

The next 3 quarters will see Rimm stuff the channel as their consumer phone sales slow. If the data rate is the same do you really want a pearl at $100 or an iphone at $199. The iphone does 5 things well (phone, internet, music, video, and email) the Pearl does email and phone.

Lastly, Rimm has a market cap of 1/2 of AAPL and 40% of Google. Is that ridiculous or what
