  • A seven-story plant with just 312 non-union employees in the Ohio town of Leipsic is "probably the best, shining example of the direction" of U.S. Steel (X), says CEO John Surma. The facility makes high-margin, custom-designed products with low-cost, highly automated equipment. A major customer is the automotive industry, which is prepared to pay the premium for the more refined steel. The facility contrasts with other, more expensive and unionized U.S. Steel facilities that employ thousands, yield tiny margins and struggle to compete.  [View news story]

  • China could "announce full capital account convertibility of the renminbi" (CYB) in a few years, Guan Tao, an architect of China's exchange rate reform, said at a conference that took place earlier this year but has only just been reported. China hopes that the liberalization of the yuan will enable it to rival the dollar as a global currency. However, the IMF's Markus Rodlauer warned that while China's aims are "well placed," going too fast "risks accidents and crisis." China would be "served well by continuing its careful approach."  [View news story]

If successful, the launch will be the first interception in more than four years of a surrogate missile incoming toward the U.S. The test will use interceptors tipped with Raytheon (RTN +0.1%) "hit-to-kill" warheads which last successfully hit their target during a December 2008 exercise, and be operated by Boeing (BA +0.8%).  [View news story]

  • In addition to Morgan Stanley, Needham, Deutsche, and SocGen have now downgraded BlackBerry (BBRY +0.2%) in response to its FQ1 miss; the cuts follow Friday downgrades from Macquarie and Wells Fargo. Deutsche's Brian Modoff (Sell) argues heavy marketing spend "will create a heavy cash burn" unless sales pick up. Needham's Charlie Wolf (Underperform) frets about competition. "While [BBM] drove sales in the emerging markets ... the competitive landscape has become much more treacherous with alternative instant messaging services and low-priced Android devices flooding this market." Shares have bounced from their premarket lows.  [View news story]

  • The falling unemployment rate signals exactly what it suggests, says JPMorgan's Brandon Odenath - the labor market is improving, hastening the end of QE and ultra-low interest rates. The meme of a declining labor force participation rate leaving headline UE devoid of meaning is mistaken, claims Odenath. Falling participation is less to do with discouraged workers and pretty much everything to do with the secular trend of an aging population. Ignore this reality at your own risk, he warns fixed income investors (AGG, BND).  [View news story]
