  • The Importance of Positive EBITDA to Sirius XM Shareholders  [View article]
Good article on a strategy that has not been given much attention. Reducing debt is critical to the success of any company, and huge debt ALWAYS weighs on share price. Mel's biz model is working. Naysayers beware.

  • Positive Cash Flow Signals New Era for Sirius XM [View article]
TerryC.....the answer is.....debt. Nothing scares off big $ investors faster than high debt, because, regardless of the shrewd refi's, it's still there, and has to be dealt with...which of course, drains income and hurts profitability. However, now that SIRI has turned the corner on losing subs, once they can show a return to good sub growth, as Mel said, fixed costs stay fixed regardless of how many subs. Then, debt will become less material. That's when this baby takes off. Patience. It will happen.

  • Are There Enough People Willing to Keep Paying for Sirius Content? [View article]
Very good piece. You captured the essence of the issue. There are MILLIONS of sports fans who will pay for sat radio.....once they know about it. S-XM will soon launch major marketing initiatives, and that will make the difference. Music is awesome, but SPORTS is a huge motivator for spending $.

  • Blocked Performance Rights Act May Present Huge Opportunity for Sirius [View article]
Would be great. However, not sure your biz model would work. I believe the artists make their money from sale of music, via iTunes other mp3 downloads and CD sales. While not getting royalties from terrestrial radio is something they don't like, the mass exposure to their music drives their sales. If S-XM had 50 million subs, perhaps that might fly, but at less than 20 million, I don't think the artists would want to 'self limit' their music exposure. I suppose in theory, an exclusive deal with S-XM could drive sub growth significantly to achieve that 50 million, but not sure about that. JIMHO of course, and I'm no expert on the music biz.

  • AT&T: Does Sirius XM Have a New Competitor?  [View article]
    Interesting.....
Actually, AT&T entering the market is probably good. It helps validate satellite radio as a viable business, perhaps convincing the naysayers that Sirius XM is here to stay. If AT&T starts advertising, Sirius XM will benefit as it will adverstise more as well to show its advantages over AT&T. This will help draw more people into this market. Everyone wins!

  • Is the New iTunes Sirius App a Sign of Things to Come?  [View article]
Hey Brandon, I am a big supporter of S-XM, but your article seems a bit over the top. A 'partnership' with Apple? While you could point to Websters and say that any type of relationship between two entitities is a form of partnership, in the biz world, suggesting a partnership between Apple and S-XM is really overreaching. As of now, the only relationship that has been publicly discussed is an iPhone app which S-XM will submit to Apple for the iPhone app store, joining thousands of such apps. All those app developers/companies are 'partners' I guess. Now, perhaps you have the inside scoop, and Apple will indeed ACTIVELY co-promote S-XM programming. That would indeed be a welcomed partnership. Will that happen? Beats me. And, that bit about the doctor program.....that sounds like Apple and S-XM each have a licensing agreement with the content provider. I think you are over stating the reality here.

  • Sirius XM Stock Action: Typical for Penny Land  [View article]
RS has been the death knell for 90% of the companies that try it. There are exceptions (priceline.com for one). But, it's risky because the street usually attaches a negative view of the strategy and the selloff following RS causes the new, higher SP from RS, to drop like a rock, killing market cap. I hope the RS does NOT happen. Let this company move forward and show pos cash flow, and then profitability, and the SP will rise on its own. The only reason to RS is to maintain listing on NASDAQ. If SIRI can get over a buck on its own, no reason to RS. IMHO.

  • Sirius XM: Long Term Gain Will Follow Short Term Pain [View article]
While I agree that the self-paying subs are very important, I do not agree that there's a media conspiracy against SIRI. The media does what it always does. It finds a weakness or sensational angle to a story and runs with it to sell newspapers, up the ratings, or increase traffic to their websites. I am not defending the behavior at all, but it's not singling out SIRI. With respect to the promotional/self pay issue, it's great that SIRI is differentiating, because growth of those who are willing to fork over their own money each month is a great indictor of increasing customer base and brand loyalty. But, SIRI is suffering now from the adage 'live by the sword, die by the sword'. Their past practice of relying on promotional subs to boosts total sub numbers for reporting purposes has created the problem. Fixing this now was a good move, but it will take time for the market to absorb this change.

  • RBC Capital Anticipates 'Dismal Subscriber Trends' for Sirius XM [View article]
Really? I didn't know that, but, that doesn't make sense from a journalist perspective. If you submit a piece with a headline and the publisher wishes to change it, there's supposed to be a discussion. And, I don't think I'd submit something without a headline and leave it up to the publisher to write their own. Publisher has editorial rights, understood. But, as a reporter, you don't have to surrender all of your rights. If I were reporting and a publisher said it's 'my way or the highway', I'd hit the road and find another publisher. Headlines are huge and it can change the take on the article since the reader is predisposed by the headline. I would never allow anyone to simply make whatever changes they want to my work without a discussion and my right to pull the piece if agreement can't be reached. that's just me.
