Ok, as a former professional mechanic, and a decent driver, this is due to the torque of the motor overriding the holding power of the brakes. The "fix" is to apply more brake pressure. Wow, a car for the masses is harder than you would think. You have to design for the lowest common denominator...... People who really shouldn't have a license, but have one anyway. I take getting behind the wheel seriously and have taken great pains to learn how to operate the 1Ton+ piece of machinery I am piloting between other machines. Go figure.

That's called a burn out... Fun for those that know how to drive. You have to balance the application of the brakes with the torque of the motor to do it correctly. A lot of the drag racers use a "line lock" system on the hydraulics to only apply the front brakes so the smoke show comes on with authority. I am sure that your traction control settings would handle that quite easily, or as Julian mentioned, corrective action for the driver (hate to use that term if you can't recognize wheel-spin....).

@BlueDiamonds - You should probably go do a little research before having such strong conviction about something...especially if there is money involved.
More on Tesla: The company announces it's offering 2.7M shares (current value of $244M) and $450M in convertible debt due 2018 in a public offering. Elon Musk plans to buy $100M worth of shares - $45M through the offering, $55M through a private placement. Tesla expects $830M in gross proceeds. TSLA now +6.8% AH. [View news story]
One thing I don't understand is why people who are supposedly some sort of authority on investing keep insisting that Tesla is doomed to failure because their product is too expensive...."Toys for the Rich". Flawed argument. Please do a LITTLE research before condemning Tesla and look at their long term plan.

JP, I understand your concern for hype and mania... however, sometimes the status quo does change. This appears to be one of those times. That's how change happens, slowly at first, then all at once (I am quoting someone, I didn't come up with this). We could be witnessing this type of event. I fully expect that, as an insider, Mr. Musk wouldn't be risking so much if he didn't know at least a few things more than you JP, lithium air, Super Caps, quick recharging, battery swap outs.... I understand your enthusiasm for start/stop technology and the batteries required to institute it, but I think this particular Eco feature will be skipped in favor of BEVs. This will sound trivial, but I think it is relevant. When growing up, I had the opportunity to purchase several R/C vehicles, both gas and electric. Time and time again I found myself going to the electric for the ease of use, lack of mess, consumables, etc. sure, the gas powered (actually Nitro Methane, but you get the drift...) ran longer, louder, and smokier but the electric was easier. I was a mechanic for 15 years and an automotive electrician for 10 of those years. I KNOW what goes wrong with what systems on a vehicle. The engine support systems are the most problematic.... Oil leaks, coolant leaks and Lead Acid battery system failure. Not to mention dying of carbon monoxide inhalation trying to pre-heat or pre-cool the vehicle in the garage.
The BEV will become cleaner as the grid and power generation clean up, the ICE will always burn and produce CO2 and other pollutants.

Second and third shift to increase production, shift differential is less than overtime. This is a non-union show, so more flexibility in hiring, firing to get quality, dedicated employees who can be encouraged to succeed with a vested interest in the company.

Your statements are all correct in my mind, until the last line. You must not have bothered to do ANY research on Tesla. I hope you exersize more due diligence with your investing than you do with your commentary! Tesla is riding a wave, while creating the next one to catch. How else would you do business? This pricing is inflated by the shorts getting clear, but don't underestimate Musk and Co. If they announce anything like 500 mile + range and fast recharge/swap out, game, set, match. Detroit has repeatedly caught flat footed when the World changes... they were still shifting production to their Suburban lines when gasoline hit its peak!
What Tesla's Share Price Is Really Implying [View article]
This is the first time I have owned stock that was subject to a short squeeze. I will admit that it is damn fun to watch. I will probably ride the wave up, and then back down just so I don't miss out when Tesla announces the 1000 Mile range and super fast charging/battery swap out times. That would be - Game, Set, Match. Tesla.
The stock is absolutely over-valued right now when crunching numbers, but worth holding on to unless you are a day-trader. The future could hold great reward with TSLA. Or not. Either way, I already consider Tesla a success, even if they were to fold tomorrow. They have turned the automotive world on it's end. There will be massive numbers of electric cars on the road soon, hopefully most of them Teslas. (One of which has me behind the wheel.)
