@ therealevan - I understand what you're saying, but my account begs to differ. On a high profile stock like AAPL, where there are boatloads of articles coming out every day, I agree. But on the smaller companies, or companies less followed, an SA article can make a big difference.

Also, sometimes a comment in an SA article can be more valuable than the article itself. That's how I found out about Primero Mining last year. Talk about a rocket ride!

  • Apple Slim Down, Buy When There's Blood In The Streets [View article]
If I were an Apple competitor I'd be a little nervous right now, because it's been way too quiet in Cupertino for a while. And I don't think that's because they've run out of products or ideas. "Blood in the streets"? The question is, whose blood?

Great article! I think many people are afraid to trade in the pre/after markets because they've read or been told that it's dangerous to do so. However, there are cases when it's dangerous not to, for example, when earnings are coming out after close (or prior to open). A stock I owned was up 12% in after hours when earnings were initially announced, only to plummet 20% when management provided terrible guidance. I was able to get out before my profits were gone, but it would have been a real bummer otherwise. Important safety tip: make sure the other shoe has dropped before you log out of your trading platform.

Really? Check out what happened to DDD and SSYS and, more recently, HIMX, in the wake of articles in SA. Do you think retail investors are the only people reading these articles?

  • Google Glass/Himax Debate Rages On, Digitimes Report Adds To The Drama [View article]
So is it possible that two guys, of no particular visibility in the investment community, can cause a stock to rise and fall hundreds of millions of dollars within a few days, on the basis of a speculative dialog? It would appear so. What a wild few days it has been.

It also appears that the symmetrical rise and fall of a stock price on the basis of this kind of news is in effect. I like the company for the long run but had to take profits while there were still profits to take.

Is there substance to the Google glasses (googles) story? Yes, no, maybe so. It is a fact that HIMX's stock doubled since August 2012, corrected a little in mid-January and was forming the right side of a nicely-formed base when it went ballistic on Tuesday. I bought it in mid-February on the strength of a recommendation by one of the best writers on this site, corroborated by other resources, before this story came to light.

Since hearing speculation about the watch, I've been fascinated by considering the possibilities. There are lots of speculation about it as an extension of the phone. But here are some observations on just the fitness/health dimension, off the top of my head:

Fitness: for running, treadmill, etc., it could have native music storage ala ipod nano and integration with iPhone. It is cumbersome to have an mp3 player strapped to your upper arm. And how about waterproof? I repeat, waterproof. Think activities like skiing, boating etc. where maybe you don't want to carry your phone on your person. GPS capability for exercise ala Garmin et. al. devices, with all of the various stopwatch, splits, distance, etc. Others have mentioned pedometer - not redundant with GPS given indoors use. Heart rate monitor integration. Caloric expenditure.

Would an iwatch be a replacement of a Phillipe Patek? But who says it has to be?

I recognize and share some of the criticisms regarding Cook's comments, yet I believe he is doing a credible job and hold out hope that behind that grin there are some big positive surprises to come. I just hope it's soon, because I don't expect to live forever.

However, while I don't think it's time to replace Tim Cook, maybe it's time to replace Steve Jobs. By that, I mean finding a new "front man". A charismatic, hair-on-fire entrepreneur, a bit eccentric and maybe a little psychotic. Let Cook continue to run the company, but find someone else to give it a fresh face and sell it to the world.
