  • Since the Court upheld Obamacare, small business owners have gone from denial to outright anger. Many entrepreneurs are focusing on figuring out what moves they can make to gum up the works and prove healthcare reform was a bad idea and offer a case study on why it will fail. Some of the top threats: Firing workers instead of hiring, stop providing health insurance altogether and pay the $2K penalty, or even going so far as to shutter their businesses.   [View news story]
Works in Massachusetts. So as long as you have a disproportionately high number of residents with advanced degrees, a hundred colleges and universities with great coverage, an insurance and finance hub, and a biotech haven universal care works well. Massachusetts is obviously a microcosm of the United States. I'm sure you can find an analogous population to represent overweight, deep fried eating, chewing tobacco loving, Mississippi. This is going to work out great.

  • The Trulia Price Monitor shows national house asking prices finally halting their slide and heading up in March, with a 1.4% Q/Q rise. The index bills itself as a leading indicator as opposed to the lagging Case-Shiller (whose January report included sales from contracts signed in September). Leading the move higher were big jumps in most all of Florida.   [View news story]

"For example I marvel at how my brothers and sisters have managed to put all their kids through private schools on their teacher and cop salaries. That accomplishment alone dwarfs the U.S. debt issue in my world. "

"Teacher and cop salaries" elevated to a point that allows for private school tuition for all their children is a modern, western phenomenon. It is a historical anomaly in public expenditures that should encourage us to think more deeply about the connection between those salaries and the debt issue. Not only does this accomplishment "dwarf the US debt issue in your world" but it is intimately related to the US, state and local debt issues. Eh?

  • China will probably have a soft landing in the near future, says World Bank President Robert Zoellick as he introduces "China 2030," a report that stresses sustainable economic expansion for China will require redefining the government's role, scaling back state-owned enterprises and gradually allowing market-set interest rates.   [View news story]
Market-set interest rates? When does the "United States 2030" report come out? I'll pay to send a few copies to the Marriner Eccles building.

  • Under discussion in Beijing is a plan to allow local governments to invest a portion of the nearly $312B in pension funds in the stock market. Current rules allow the money to only be parked in bank deposits or government paper. Give the Chinese credit - stocks in Shanghai are near 3 year lows. Governments typically only get interested in buying equities during (and likely at the end of) major bull markets.   [View news story]
