  • 3 Reasons For RIM To Smile [View article]
I think brand loyalty is generally overestimated across the board when it comes to phones, and this is good news for RIMM. As for the OS and your assessment as what counts as "exotic" - that is a bit of a stretch.

I will say that they've greatly improved their product design but the customer service is terrible and their website is a mess.

  • Microsoft (MSFT) has signed a patent licensing deal with Research In Motion (RIMM) covering its exFAT file system for flash memory devices. The deal follows an exFAT licensing agreement with Sharp. Microsoft is asserting its patents for the older FAT file system in a case against Motorola Mobility. (PR[View news story]
Is it just me, or does RIMM keep looking like a bargain waiting to happen at this price? I'm just waiting for a sufficiently compelling reason to put some money down, but a deal with Microsoft is not that reason. The reception of BB10 will be the litmus test for me, but I can't write this company off - they are simply too valuable, though certainly this may not be enough to move forward. My point is, that I see the potential for real momentum for RIMM when, and if, they ever get moving again. Whether that interest is sustainable over the longer term is another story, but this company is still attractive to investors. The company certainly has not fallen off anyone's radar.

  • Has Apple Peaked? [View article]
The thing is, a 12 year old doesn't make his own purchase decisions, his parents do - this is the demo that's loyal to Apple, mostly because they can afford to be. But when that kid is 15 - he's not going to want an iPad, he's going to want some cool next-best-thing that his buddies older brother has - which will not be an iPad. The older peers of this demographic don't like to spend money, I've noticed. Probably because they don't have any. Just my two cents.

You're kids are going to be influenced by their older peers who are migrating to lower-priced android devices. I personally have no idea what the hype about the Nexus 7 is, but the main attraction seems to be price.

  • Apple Goes For Samsung's Throat: New Complaint Targets All Samsung Mobile Devices [View article]
Apple is positioning themselves as a monopoly leveraging their power and profits to control (and limit) consumer choice. Lawsuits are bad PR, even if you win them. Apple should be focusing on the next big thing, instead of squandering resources on their protectionist tactics.

Apple has got one generation of consumers left before something else is the next big thing. Younger consumers (and I mean school children) are going to be influenced by their older peers who are migrating toward (lower priced) android devices. Apple will hang onto it's older, loyal customers who value quality and are still habituated to the expense of these products - but that market isn't growing.

I give Apple 5 years - but it will be more like 3.

  • Alcatel-Lucent - The Rope Is Getting Tighter [View article]
I so hope you're right. I was gifted a large chunk of this stock 12 years ago - so sad to watch the value of it vaporize, yearly. I keep hoping it will be worth something, someday.

  • Suncor Energy Still Appears Undervalued [View article]
The drop in share price is directly related the decision to split the stock in 2008 - the company was determined to so so if it looked like share price go above $100. Within months, the stock dropped from $72 to around $32 - and has not moved since. I have no idea what the problem is with SU, they obviously make money - but I think anyone whose waiting for it to up will be waiting for quite some time.
