The thing is, a 12 year old doesn't make his own purchase decisions, his parents do - this is the demo that's loyal to Apple, mostly because they can afford to be. But when that kid is 15 - he's not going to want an iPad, he's going to want some cool next-best-thing that his buddies older brother has - which will not be an iPad. The older peers of this demographic don't like to spend money, I've noticed. Probably because they don't have any. Just my two cents.
You're kids are going to be influenced by their older peers who are migrating to lower-priced android devices. I personally have no idea what the hype about the Nexus 7 is, but the main attraction seems to be price.

Apple is positioning themselves as a monopoly leveraging their power and profits to control (and limit) consumer choice. Lawsuits are bad PR, even if you win them. Apple should be focusing on the next big thing, instead of squandering resources on their protectionist tactics.

Apple will hang onto it's older, loyal customers who value quality and are still habituated to the expense of these products - but that market isn't growing.
