  • Visa slicing away stake in Monitise [View news story]
In a NY times article on Monday, I think, a Visa rep is quoted as indicating they had 1,000 people working on Apple Pay. A JP Morgan rep indicated they had 300 people on Apple Pay. Not good for Monitise!

Exited monif at .75 and glad I did.

  • Analysis: Apple Pay to benefit Visa and MasterCard [View news story]
The MCX approach, CurrentC, which is in pilot and is planned to go live in 2015 is interesting in that it will only support member merchant credit cards and rewards programs. If they can reach escape velocity with mobile payments at the POS, a big if, then Am Ex, Visa and MC may have to come to the table with incentives.

    Again, a big if!

  • Visa announces Apple Pay-friendly payments solution [View news story]
That is true. Evidently the difference here is that Apple has embedded the Visa token scheme into the secure environment of the iphone 6. I am not aware on any Android devices doing that yet but I could be wrong and I imagine Android manufacturers will do so soon.

  • Apple's Payments Platform May Be Ready To Roll [View article]
Just wondering if there is any more information concerning the merchant device. It seems to me that in-store purchases require a reader device at or embedded into the Point of Sale System. Starbucks has the device but I think it is proprietary.

    Any insights?

  • 2 Dividend Stocks To Buy, 2 To Avoid, And 1 To Sell For Retirees [View article]
Hi Todd, thanks for another informative article. Given that Vodaphone (VOD) owns 45% of Verizon (VZ) do you also have a negative investment opinion on VOD for retirees? Thanks.

  • Frontier Communications: Skeptical Outlook On Plans And Performance [View article]
If customer service is to be the competitive advantage then FTR has a long, long way to go. As a former Verizon now FTR customer I know first hand that customer service has declined ... not improved. Yes rural customers are captive until competition arrives.

  • Buy The AdvisorShares Active Bear ETF: A Different Kind Of Market Hedge [View article]
Thank you for this informative article. I have used HDGE, SH and EFZ as a hedge to my long portfolio. During this market downturn SH has underperformed both HDGE and EFZ with EFZ doing slightly better. I have stopped using SH but continue to hold HDGE and EFZ.

  • Annaly: A Negative Scenario Currently [View article]
I share the concern with future NLY dividend yields. I have put protective puts in place to offset dramatic decreases in stock price which will occur with declining dividend payments . Hedging decreases my net dividend yield for NLY but it is still much better than most alternatives. Historically, NLY dividend yield has been lower. For instance, for 2006 based on year end NLY stock price, which was increasing throughout the year, the annual dividend yield was 4.1%. As a note 10 yr U.S. Treasuries began and ended 2006 in the mid 4% range although they peaked in the summer at 5.2.

Bottom line is things are difficult and it pays to "be careful out there". Hence the hedge.

  • Dividend Stock Portfolio Management During Turbulent Markets [View article]
Todd, I never applied direct portfolio hedges before I began following you on SA. I used indirect hedges and trailing stops which have their own set of challenges. Now I am using option collars and protective puts. I like knowing my worst case loss scenario. Thanks.

  • Frontier Communications' CEO Discusses Q1 2012 Results - Earnings Call Transcript [View article]
I am long FTR but skeptical. As a converted Verizon customer in N.C. I can say that the broadband service is good but the customer service including billing is absolutely the worst I have ever experienced. Without these things getting fixed I have my doubts for their business success.

  • Annaly: A Strong Buy For Income [View article]
You can buy protective puts for any mReit that trades options, or you might consider buying REM puts to hedge a basket of mReits.

  • Annaly: A Strong Buy For Income [View article]
With all respect the Federal Reserve has not "committed" to keeping interest rates low through 2013. What they have done is forecasted where they think interest rates will be over that time. Once they believe the economic growth is sustainable without more stimulus their "forecast" will change no matter what the date.

IMHO protective put options are in order for mReits.

  • Annaly: What Is Going On? (Part 3) [View article]
Thank you for the article. I have held NLY in the past and exited the position a few months ago. I still hold other mREITS. My concern with NLY is, what I perceive to be, a lack of transparency in their quarterly earnings narative and conference calls, especially last quarter.

    Thanks again.

  • Annaly Capital May Be Able To Maintain Its Dividend [View article]
Thank you for the article. Cramer is never wrong? Indeed!

My new concern about NLY comes from their quarterly earnings conference call. They noted that the reduction in leverage was intentional and in keeping with thier conservative portfolio managment style. Ok, good but they never gave any indication, nor did they anser the question, of when, or what circumstances would cause them to increase leverage and therefore earnings and dividends.

I am long NLY (but thinking about exiting, AGNC, ANH, MTGE, HTS

  • Despite Dividend Cuts, mREITs Are Okay [View article]
The FED wants to low mortgage interest rates and so does the administration. The administration also wants to forgive/forget/redo mortgages. The hope that a republican congress won't go along with such a massive refinancing effort is only good assuming they hold onto Congress. Probably not a good bet with a sizeable Obama victory in November. All of this puts downward pressure on the spread available to mReits. I expect a continuing decline in dividend $$ going forward.

I am long AGNC, NLY, HTS, CYS, MTGE
