I will bet there are plenty of time for a young investor in the future to buy income oriented stocks at a much better price because interest rate has no place to go but up.

  • Will The Fed's Rate Hike Kill REITs? [View article]
too many people are looking for charts or curve fitting charts and think that will predict the future.
it does not exist. given any n set of data point you can always find a curve that will fit perfectly. but it has no capability to predict the next data point. I learnt my lesson in 73 writing the only paper I wrote that do ria curve fitting that were turn down.

  • IBM: A Comment On Price Vs. Value [View article]
I do not care what you use the fact is very simple. ibm is going down hill in the last 20 years. all your glorify ibm stock return from 2002 or 2004 are meaningless if you compare it with other tech stock. the average tech stock out perform ibm by a big margin from 2002 or 2004.

  • The U.S. Stock Market Will Charge Higher [View article]
I am 70%sure the market will not gain much in the next 2 years as compared with the last 2. when the upside potential is low it may not be worth the risk to bet in the market. if you have big gains already you can afford to wait longer to be sure a drop is big enough to be the beginning of a bear market and not a correction. corrections are good abd not harmful for a. bull market

  • Confessions Of A Young DGI [View article]
the biggest problem that divident and income investor often do not pay enough attention is the change within the company especially it's basic business. they rely on the history too much. for example today ibm is almost the complete opposite of what ibm was even 20 years ago. in the old days young bright engineers want to join ibm and employees mostly are very proud being an ibmer. today at least in silicone valley no one want to work for ibm and that means no more new talent. they use to develop all the products in house and now all the new tech come from buying other companies. other companies like jnj Colgate and Kimberly Clark are still going like 20 years ago even thought the growth rate may have slow down.

  • A Dividend Growth Portfolio - How Did Income Hold Up During The Last Recession? [View article]
This remind me of my effort in the late 90 trying to varied all kinds of parameters in different technical analysis to find something that can beat the market. I can almost use any formula and adjust parameters and use any stock for any time period and out perform the market. that is curve fitting. Unfortunately it is useless to predict the future. try it yourself. Say just use the data from 1970 to 1990 and come up with your best method and then see how it work out in 1991 to 2015

  • You On Demand expands service partnership with Dr. Peng Group [View news story]
    VOD is a scam.
They pump the stock on feb 2014 all over the internet. They published an article here in SA by someone who had never publish anything before and never publish anything since.
Their reported revenue even if it is true is so small that even the smallest theater in China would have a higher revenue than their whole company. None of my friend in China have ever heard of this company or its product.

  • Don't Fear The Fed Rate-Hike Bogeyman [View article]
Remember, if my currency is losing value against the USD -- say 10% annually (conservative for just about any country in Latin America or Asia)

I stop reading when I get to this ridiculous statement. Very few countries in Latin America or Asia have lost 10% a year against the USD. In Asia other than Japan I am not aware of any other country that has lost 10% a year to the USD in the last 3 years. China is exactly flat with the USD. All other major Asian countries also are not losing 10% a year.

  • Momentum And Stop Losses [View article]
Let me make myself clear. This article is talking about stop lose that is base on the whole stock market and not individual stocks. My comment is also for the total market and not individual stocks.

So the stop loss for the whole market is something you set up and you should modify it at least monthly. The % should be changed according to your evaluation of the current situation. I have set it at 15% most of the time until recently. I am now ready to bail because I do not like what I see as interest rate is going up and yet the overall economic situation in the world are not that good.

Also anyone who place a market order of anything today is really "stupid". It should always a limit order. If the market is dropping fast you can use a sell order with a limit below the bid but always a limit order. Also because you cannot use market order you must make sure you do not wait till the last few minutes to close out your position. This is critical for options that you do not have enough margin to cover if they are assigned.

  • The Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF And The Front-Runner [View article]
Overall Vanguard is a great company and has done more to lower the cost of investment for the average investor. My wife has most of her retirement account in Vanguard. Last month We roll over a define retirement account into a RIA with Vanguard and I set up a stock trading account with level 2 options.

First thing I did is look at all the vanguard etf and mutual funds for US equities. One thing that surprise me is that the 10 year total return for most of them are very similar and only varied about 3%. That goes from dividend appreciation to large cap to small cap to value etc. The only funds that really outperform are sector oriented.

Their set up for IRA account with stock and option trading is very inefficient. You have one basis account that you use to trade mutual funds. Then you have a separate account that trade stocks and options and they are supposedly linked. The problem is in their web pages that show you the data inside the account. They are not up to date and out of syn. I have sold put options that expired last Friday (6/12) that still show up this Monday at 1pm ny time. Not only that they move money into the second account to cover the margin but they did not reduce that from the first account. So my total asset amount was wrong by over 300k. I am going to investigate and talk to them and if they do not improve I will have no choice but move my money to other firms. Also I place an order to sell 40 puts. 24 sold and then 5 sold at 0.13 my limit. Then I change the order to sell the rest at 0.12. That is consider as 3 trades and I lost 3 free trade. I have never seen that with any other companies that I have accounts with.

  • Improve Your Sector Returns With Equal Weighting [View article]
Most index (>95%) are cap weighted and equal weight is obviously putting more money in companies that is smaller by market size. How can it be not true?
For those index that are not cap weighted like the dow that is weighted by the price of stock that is a completely different issue and very few index are like that.
