Alasdair started his career as a stockbroker in 1970 on the London Stock Exchange. In those days, trainees learned everything: from making the tea, to corporate finance, to evaluating and dealing in equities and bonds. They learned rapidly through experience about things as diverse as mining shares and general economics. It was excellent training, and within nine years Alasdair had risen to become senior partner of his firm.
Subsequently, Alasdair held positions at director level in investment management, and worked as a mutual fund manager. He also worked at a bank in Guernsey as an executive director.
For most of his 40 years in the finance industry, Alasdair has been de-mystifying macro-economic events for his investing clients. The accumulation of this experience has convinced him that unsound monetary policies are the most destructive weapon governments use against the common man. Accordingly, his mission is to educate and inform the public in layman’s terms what governments do with money and how to protect themselves from the consequences.

Joseph has been an analyst, investor, and student of economic theory; money and banking; and statistical methods for evaluating and implementing risk/reward trading algorithms since 1972. Joseph is also an occasional contributor to financial publications and his essays are frequently cited by other financial websites and publications.
Since the end of the Great Recession, Joseph came to recognize that traditional methodologies for forecasting economic growth and investment asset pricing are no longer of value, and a broader understanding of the post Glass Steagall, financially engineered world that has driven markets and economies since the turn of the century is required today.
He has a good grasp of Shadow Banking, High Frequency Trading, and Dark Pools, and their impact on today’s markets. He has also spent considerable time understanding the new global paradigm of central bank involvement in experimental policy designed to better control economies.
Joseph doesn’t subscribe to a specific school of theory on economics. Rather, his thinking is based on a combination of the Classical School, the Austrian School, and the Keynesian School. He even sees the writings of Karl Marx as particularly instructive.
Joseph is particularly fond of the following quote from Albert Einstein and sees his own work as driven by that same passionate curiosity that Einstein refers to:
“I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.”
Coming in a close second in terms of favorite quotes that express his views, Joseph embraces Lord Acton’s views expressed here:
“The danger is not that a particular class is unfit to govern.
Every class is unfit to govern."

Econophile is Jeff Harding, a real estate investor and former lawyer in Santa Barbara, California. He is a principal of Montecito Analytics, LLC. He has many years of experience in business cycles, real estate investments, and finance. He also was financing director of a home builder. He was also an Adjunct Professor of Real Estate Investment at Santa Barbara City College.
He writes The Daily Capitalist, a blog dealing with economics, finance, and investment risk. He is a frequent contributor to Zero Hedge, Minyanville, and his articles are republished or linked to on many other blogs, such as the Huffington Post, Real Clear Politics, Real Clear Economics, Wall Street Journal, Mises Institute, Lew Rockwell, and many others.
The Daily Capitalist blog takes a fresh, unconventional look at current economics. In light of the poor track record of most economists before and during our economic crisis, it's time to think about different approaches explaining economic activity. The blog is also an advocate of new methods of evaluating investment risk in light of this most recent blow-up.
The Daily Capitalist does not give investment or market advice and doesn't sell or promote any investment products.
Jeff Harding is a graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and U.C., Hastings College of the Law. He is a longtime student of economics.

I became worried about the imbalances in the global economy back in 1996, when I was a student of the fundamentals of macroeconomics.
Since then, I have observed the global economic imbalances becoming even larger, with the paradoxical result that the forces responsible for creating the imbalances (central banks) have gained even greater powers in manipulating price setting mechanisms of global financial markets.
I believe that these imbalances will eventually be corrected. And that the more policy makers try to prevent the economy from correcting, the more violent and dramatic the correction eventually will be.
As a consequence, I am devoting my time to investments in alternative asset classes, to the benefit of both myself and my employer.
All opinions expressed are my own, and I do not guarantee the accuracy of any data provided.
Acting Man has been named after the title of the first chapter of Ludwig von Mises' book "Human Action" - the best treatise on economics ever written. The blog's main author is Pater Tenebrarum, an independent analyst who has been involved with financial markets for 34 years and is writing economic and market analyses for independent research organizations and a European hedge fund consultancy. Acting Man presents articles on the markets and the economy, a mixture of commentary on current events as well as economic theory and history, mainly from an Austrian School of Economics viewpoint. As more authors have joined the site, we have begun to broaden our palette a bit, but our orientation remains the same: pro-free market, anti-state, pro peace.
Elliott Gue knows energy. Since earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of London, Elliott has dedicated himself to learning the ins and outs of this dynamic sector, scouring trade magazines, attending industry conferences, touring facilities and meeting with management teams.
For seven years, Elliott Gue shared his expertise and stock-picking abilities with individual investors through a highly regarded, energy-focused research publication. Elliott Gue’s knowledge of the sector and prescient investment calls prompted the official program of the 2008 G-8 Summit in Tokyo to call him “the world’s leading energy strategist.”
He has also appeared on CNBC and Bloomberg TV and has been quoted in a number of major publications, including Barron’s, Forbes and the Washington Post.
In October 2012, Elliott Gue launched the Energy & Income Advisor (www.EnergyandIncomeAdvisor.com), a semimonthly online newsletter that’s dedicated to uncovering the most profitable opportunities in the energy sector, from growth stocks to high-yielding utilities, royalty trusts and master limited partnerships.
The masthead may have changed, but subscribers can expect the same in-depth analysis and rational assessments of investment opportunities in the energy sector.
Up until a century ago, there appears to have been a fairly equal emphasis on economic theory and observation. Although the interest in economics has probably always been a consequence of the need of the state to acquire resources, we are now at the point where the discipline of economics is both completely at the service of ideological camps and completely convinced of its own objectivity and scientific underpinnings.
I have taken an interest in markets since 2008, after which my already scant regard for conventional wisdom in the modern social sciences plunged even further. I try to understand historical price behavior and see what it says about present market conditions.
Over 30 years of investing in individual stocks. Extensive business experience with small to mid-size companies, including as CEO. Many hundreds of blog posts on financial and economic matters since 2008. Focus on value with catalysts for upside price action.
