Getting Over Print Newspapers

I find this issue of print vs online very relevant. I work for a newspaper publisher. we print 3 papers with 1 online. i'm very interested in bringing a proposal about taking the smallest paper online but i really need a greater understanding of what it takes do that and the ramifications especially for a paper in a market of about 100,000 with a fair literacy rate and a fair access to the internet. This debate here has really got me interested in new media and the real implications for print media.
My real question is should you letting an ailing better die or attempt to resuscitate it online? Or what is the best way to strike a balance between the 2?
