To add a bit to ONeil's comments, shorting is not usually a bet that the stock will fail. It is more common that a stock that is perceived to be overvalued receives attention from those looking for short position opportunities. Thus AMZN has been a popular short even though most would not expect AMZN to fail as a business.

When you short a stock, you are borrowing the shares. Essentially, you receive the value of the shares at the time of your taking the short position in your account (e.g., short 1000 shares @ $50 would put $50,000 into your account). This is not free money as margin interest rates are applied. Also, unlike buying a stock, your losses can be more than 100% (although not likely, a buyout could drive a stock to more than double, say to $120/share--leaving you on the hook to cover those shares at more than double the amount you borrowed at $50/share).

Lets say TSLA moves to $75, someone short at $50 is now $25/share to the negative. There are limits to how much margin you can use, so if the individual exceeds the margin limit they will be forced to sell shares that they own. This creates additional pressure besides being down $25/share. This pressure will force the person with the short position to buy shares to cover the short position and that will in turn tend to drive up the price of the stock due to the increase in demand to cover. The increased price then causes other shorts to scramble to buy shares to cover and you have a short squeeze.

More on Barrick Gold's (ABX) Q1 results: ABX's 18% Y/Y drop in profit is attributed to lower gold and copper prices and reduced volumes sold. But ABX reaffirms 2013 gold production guidance of 7M-7.4M oz. at total cash costs of $610-$660/oz. Full year all-in sustaining cost guidance reduced to $950-$1,050/oz. from $1,000-$1,100/oz. previous guidance. Shares +2.9% premarket.

Is Green Mountain Coffee Roasters (GMCR -4.4%) gaining enough market share to compensate for lower K-cup prices? That's the question that could be answered when the company reports earning on May 8 and also has importance in evaluating the next couple of quarters. Sector watch: The company - along with peers (KRFT, SJM, PEET, DNKN) - received a bit of a jolt when Starbucks dropped the pricing on its 12-ounce bagged coffee by a dollar to $8.99.

While Jill Priluck decries "the dark side of shareholder activism" on Reuters, the NYT's James Stewart highlights the "sham" shareholder democracy that has seen directors at dozens of publicly traded companies retaining their positions despite losing elections. The firms include Cablevision Systems (CVC), Vornado Realty Trust (VNO) and medical diagnostics Iris International, where shareholders rejected all nine directors in May 2011. They resigned but then voted to reject their own resignations.
