If there is a Tablet coming (i.e., a super-sized iPod Touch/iPhone), the question is WHEN.
In the "old" days, Apple made big product announcements in early January at the Macworld conference, but now they don't attend it. So a pre-Christmas announcement of a smallish, highly fedexable product makes the most sense.

The US should have a free and ubiquitous signal, whether cell or WiFi or other. The analogy to our free and ubiquitous interstate highway system is very strong and would cause an explosion of economic growth. (This coming from a very conservative Republican.)

My thought is that such a device would be marketed as a new top-end model of both the iPod Touch and iPhone. The size would be the maximum that can fit into a pocket.
Hence it would cannibalize but also expand the market for those devices, while providing even higher profits.
I will trade my gen one iPhone immediately for this.

On the positive side, in Apple's target market, unemployment has not been a real factor.
In the US thus far, net job losses have been 100% blue (ish) collar. Zero net job losses in the white collar, professional, college-educated type categories.
However, Apple's target market IS in a mode of paying down debt which will cause a flattening of sales.
