  • Does Amazon Need to Be So Highly Regulated? [View article]
I agree with the sentiment entirely. It seems every state and local government is going after Amazon for taxes, which is unfortunate. The fact that how-much-you-see-is-ho... (in most cases, not all) is one of the factors (one of many) that have heped Internet e-commerce to thrive. Let's make sure it continue to thrive. You can't punish Amazon for being successful.

Speaking of which, I found an interesting way to get free shipping and find discounted items on Amazon. It's especially helpful when you are just a buck or two short of free shipping. You can find it at
    www.uberi.com

It's on the right side of the page where you can find so called "filler items" to get free shipping on Amazon. There is also a discount table for Amazon through the top menu. I have found both to be quite useful. Have fun with it. :)

  • Kindle - Good Device, Impractical Pricing [View article]
(Please excuse the mess in the previous comment). My stupid text editor inserted a bunch of HTML tags and messed it up. Let me try to paste it again...

The article states my sentiment exactly! :) Kindle is just too expensive. Otherwise, I would be interested in it very much.

On the other hand, Amazon may or may not be making much on Kindle 2 depending on the operating costs outside of the materials and manufacturing process, such as advertising, Kindle Store, and other related activities.

Anyway, I don't have a Kindle but checked one out from a friend. While I am very interested in Kindle, I am still waiting for these books to be DRM free. It's just so much easier and "thought-free" when I don't have to worry about DRM and how I use something. The higher the resolution, the better it is too. We are nowhere near true 300-dpi but that's a technical limitation at this point.

On the note about Amazon, I recently came across an interesting table that details the discounts on Amazon.

    It is at www.uberi.com

Maybe someone will find it useful too.

  • What the CARD Act of 2009 Means for Consumers  [View article]
It's only natural that the credit card bill gets passed (obviously, it's not quite signed into law yet). After all, which representative is going to say no? His/her opponent will have a field day in the next election when the time comes.

Of course, it is only expected that banks are taking issues with this. There is no reason for them to go quietly. People use their credit cards and it will be difficult for anyone to abandon their cards just because they take a different stance.

I actually love using credit cards to accrue cash back and it's easier to track expenses. Something that cannot be easily done or as well done with a debit card or cash. I simply pay it off every month.

I also pay off the entire balance every month to avoid any fees whatsoever and absolutely refuse to carry any balance. There is just no point in doing so. If I cannot pay it off in full, then I wouldn't spend the money at first place.

Online websites for research and finding good deals is another way I stretch my dollars farther. For example, I recently came across an interesting table that details the discounts on Amazon at:
    www.uberi.com

I imagine other people will find it useful too.

Google is a great company, but to continue to grow at the same pace as two years ago going forward is going to be a tough act to follow in the future, even after the economy has turned around.

  • Piracy May Be the Kindle DX's Savior [View article]
The point about how piracy may save Kindle is an interesting one that sort of makes some sense in a larger context. It is still kind of odd that it costs as much as a laptop for most consumers (not counting students subsidized by Amazon or schools).

If they indeed properly take care of tables, graphics, annotations, that would make this a very powerful tool for textbooks. The impact on traditional newspaper is less clear, unless Kindle can have a very low price point.

I don’t have a Kindle but checked one out from a friend. The screen is very neat and unlike most standard back-lit LCDs. If you get a chance, check it out. Kindle’s display is VERY cool and more comfortable for all-day reading.

In any case, it is awesome that there is another, larger screen, Kindle coming out. It is pretty exciting that Amazon is putting a ton of effort into revolutionizing and popularizing eBooks.

On the note about Amazon, I came across an interesting table that shows Amazon’s discounts in various categories.

Maybe someone will find it useful too, or at least somewhat amusing…

  • Why Amazon's Kindle May Be Paying for Itself [View article]
I agree with the analysis very much. You have taken into account ot costs beyond bill of materials, which are important. Things such as operating cost, marketing cost, wireless connection all need to be taken into considerations. Many others articles don't. Thank you for pointing it out.

It's also very true that it's a means to an end and not the end. It seems a lot of people are missing that point too. Glad to see someone doing a more objective and realistic analysis.

Anyway, I don't have a Kindle but checked one out from a friend. While I am very interested in Kindle, I am still waiting for these books to be DRM free.
