  • UPG: A Rare Net/Net Opportunity [View article]
Seems like a great value play, but several disturbing features about this company when you read the 10-K. Entirely a family company - two top execs are the son-in-law and daughter of the largest shareholder. The net working capital you get is all inventory - $32M of it. They are getting just over 3 turns of inventory per year, but you have to wonder about the obsolescence - their current allowance for obsolete inventory is $1.15M. And they are audited by BKD, LLP - a firm no one has ever heard of, which is additional cause for concern.

Obviously the market hasn't "woken up" to this value play - probably the only chance to make some money is with an acquisition. But I doubt the controlling family would sell for less than the IPO price of $6, so that would be a big premium for another electronics distributor to pay.
