  • Apple May Be Worth $1111, But Shares Won't Get There Anytime Soon [View article]
What people "want" is what drives the market, not what people "need" otherwise water would be $100 per cup. Apple products are selling like hotcakes because people want them. Apple is destroying the competition and the Christmas sales are about to get priced into the stock, well before the earnings report on 24 Jan, IMHO. The only reason Samsung is catching up is because they were so far behind. Maybe in a few years your fears will be well founded, but not today. Apple has hit a turnaround point and as soon as this fiscal cliff drama plays out it's up up and away.

  • Zynga's Core Business Continues To Implode [View article]
Run away from Znga. Pincus is a crook, he always has been. He used crooked tactics to start up his games three years ago, he has been unable to hold any significant number of top officers in the company as they continue to jump ship at will, he has no qualms about blasting FB in public, and although I think they deserve it, as a businessman you are out of your mind to make such public comments from the company that provides your platform. Znga does very few things well, they are in decline and the best that they can hope for is to stop the bleeding...this is a stagnant stock at best but it is probably still going down.

  • Why Apple Will Miss Earnings And Trade Below $600 [View article]
The IPad mini has an estimated $185 cost which will result in about a 44% margin. Moreover, Apple is exercising its pricing power which will reinforce the general belief that Apple products are superior. This is a marketing mind trick - it works and it will work here too.
The IPhone sales will be much higher than 21.5 million. The carriers numbers strongly support an argument for at least an overall sales number of 27 million IPhones, likely more. But Tim Cook's comments suggest only 16 mil IPAD's rather than 18 million.
AAPL on their last conference call said they are expecting EPS of 7.65. Analysts are expecting about $8.83, I believe the actual number will be close to 8.83 (+/-), but I also believe Apple will give great guidance as they have generated all kinds of great buzz for Christmas. And with the great management team that they have, I'm also betting that they will take care of the supply problems.
Buying more if it dips after the earnings, but hoping I'm right about guidance and that shares go higher after the bell. Tempting to buy about 20 calls here, but they are just a bit expensive with the high IV.

  • Can Anyone Breach Apple's Moat? [View article]
"...but be wary when Jan comes along and they knock the ball into the next county with mini and 5 and you're out trying to cover."

When AAPL reports on 25 OCT, regardless of how many IP5's they sold, they will most likely give an indication that product sales for Christmas will be through the roof. Everyone and their grandmother is going to be getting an IPad mini, or whatever they finally call it. And if nothing is stated in the conference call, those kind of sales are what investors are going to be expecting.

  • Is Gold An Inflation Hedge Or Something More? [View article]
I'll take a pass on gold right now. I keep thinking about getting some, but I just can't pull the trigger. It is a unique asset with a lot of speculation. The gold bugs want to profit off owning gold, when the historical analysis shows that gold just maintains it's value, with sharp corrections that may last for extended periods of time. I believe if the economy starts to turn the corner, then investors will pile out of gold and into other more attractive investments, and gold prices will correct. Inflation/deflation/cu... price of gold going up depends heavily on the economy continuing to be crappy, and if it stays ho hum or improves, then AAPL is the place to be.

I never seem to hear anyone say anything about India and China influencing the price of gold. Nearly 2.5 billion people, two nations emerging from decades of poverty, and many of those 2.5 billion people see gold as a status symbol and want to own it and wear it. Demand from Indian and Chinese people coming into their own wealth has certainly had some factor in the run-up of gold prices over the last decade, and this trend will most certainly continue.

  • Is Gold An Inflation Hedge Or Something More? [View article]
I just googled some charts for gold prices and 30 year bond rates from 1980-1982. I don't see any relation. Gold acts in many ways like a stock. There is a lot of market psychology, speculation, and random price movements, mix that with some science and statistics, and you may be able to produce a tell.

  • Facebook (FB +0.7%) has unveiled a big overhaul for its popular Open Graph social sharing platform, with an eye towards reducing spam. "Custom actions" from developers that automatically share activity won't be allowed, and an API that allows users to post activity to a friend's wall is gone. On the other hand, Open Graph content with images and location data will be given more prominence. Facebook has already worked to reduce game-related spam, something that appears to be affecting Zynga's results[View news story]
"Facebook has already worked to reduce game-related spam, something that appears to be affecting Zynga's results."
FB needs to distance themselves from Zynga or acquire them. Zynga has all kinds of problems, and it starts at the top/CEO. If FB acquired Zynga at their Enterprise Value, which would be a drop in the bucket for FB, they could make the FB / Social Games a much more seamless fit. Zynga is on its own program which is not helping them or FB.

  • Buy Apple Now While It's Cheap [View article]
Technicals still look bad, fundamentals look good enough to outweigh the recent gaffs. Apple looks great long term, but anyone wanting to time the bottom may miss what could be a great opportunity. The Apple bear stories are so familiar and repeated. My only slightly nutty conspiracy theory is that Apple purposely under-performs this quarter in order to buy their own stock back cheap, but like I said, it's nutty. I believe Apple will do well this quarter; if they haven't sold enough IP5's to meet analyst expectations (appx $8.89/share different than Apple's guidance of $7.65/share), Apple gives new guidance for strong holiday numbers and the stock surges. Everyone keeps talking about the IP5 numbers for Q4 - that will not matter nearly as much as the guidance. Whatever they don't sell in Q4 they sell in Q1, and none of the analysts are predicting competitors to be able to take that market share, at least not in any significant amount.
