  • Zimmer: A Strong Player In The Medical Device Industry [View article]
Great report. My concern is that they do have exposure to China ( 5 - 10% of revenue) and Europe and with uncertainty growing over how hard China will land top line growth will continue to be sluggish and dividend growth may be tempered if the landing is harder than anticipated.

  • As Facebook (FB -3.4%) sells off on news director/seed investor Peter Thiel has cashed out in a big way, VC Fred Wilson defends Thiel's actions by arguing investors are obligated to return capital to clients as quickly as possible. But as Dan Primack points out, most of Thiel's sales involved his personal stake in Facebook. VC Ann Winblad also defends Thiel, but thinks Facebook and other public companies are better off not having VCs such as Thiel serve as board members. [View news story]
I hear Peter is going to use that cash and pour it into his pet project on promoting less college and more "high school education is enough" campaign. Is there a way to cash in on young entrepreneur camp?

  • Mako Surgical's Market Penetration Is Key [View article]
Lots of cheaper ways to do the same thing. Mako is a marketing ploy that provides excellent forecast on utilization but stock is still married to system placement whereas Intuitive has gotten past that and investors just care about procedure volumes. Would stay away from Mako until sell cycle timing cloud clarifies. They missed twice in 2 quarters on what was supposed to be achievable targets.. miss it the 3rd time and the stock will go to zero.

  • Groupon's (GRPN) Q/Q revenue growth over the last 6 quarters, per Scott Austin: 72%, 97%, 10%, 14%, 14%, 2%. Y/Y billings growth, meanwhile, has fallen from 103% in Q1 to 39% in Q2, and active customer growth from 3.2M to 1.1M. Groupon blames the slowdown on European softness, which led international growth to fall by more than 2/3. Shares -18.2% AH and now down 69% from their IPO price. (CC webcast) (Q2 results) Update: More details here. Groupon claims a greater dependence on high-price discretionary deals in Europe played a role. [View news story]
Wow thanks for the European perspecitve. I'm putting GRPN in the same boat as ZNGA. Wait for them to go through the pain of creating a real sustainable "non-Faddy" business then will revisit.

  • Fidelity slashes its Facebook (FB -3.6%) stake - 21 of its funds selling over 1.9M shares in June. The sales are quick ones for Fidelity, which likes to "kick the tires and ask questions," says John Bonnanzio of Fidelity Insight. "It seems they ultimately decided that they didn't like what they see."  [View news story]
FB execs leaving for greener pastures. BEtter way for them to monetize is to start their own copmanies and sell back to FB as it becomes more desperate to cling onto anythign for growth.

  • Facebook Hits A New All-Time Low: Buy Soon [View article]
Agree that there could be a buying opportunity soon but still feel that significant volatility could be in store.. Possibly an iron condor trade may make sense as the next earnings call could bring another round of significant upside or downside.
