  • The Rebalancing Of The U.S. Coal And Natural Gas Industry [View article]
I'm still interested in your answer, but I wanted to get options and there is no action in KOL options, so I got some June BTU calls. You better be right on this or I will be shaking my fist at you! ;o) Hopefully I'll be calling you my best friend instead. :o)

What do you think of KOL? It used to be my old favorite and I have none now.

I hope you're right, sheeple. That sounds great!

Stuff gets shipped no matter what gas prices are. Costs get passed along to the consumer in the form of higher product prices.

  • Deciding Between A 'Reverse Iron Condor' Or 'Strangle' Earnings Trade [View article]
I have enjoyed reading this article but I don't have the kind of account size necessary to do these kind of multiple-position things. Anyway, I thought I'd update: I was only half-joking when I said I'd report back to say how I didn't do anything and lost my money.

I didn't do anything and watched those gains evaporate and my position go negative (see what the option traded for on March 1 and then March 6. I had originally bought it at $1.12.) Thankfully, I sat tight and was lucky enough to cash out yesterday for a profit of more like 60%. That's a harrowing tale, isn't it? I should learn not to take such reckless risks, but so far I've done OK (key words being: "so far.")

  • Deciding Between A 'Reverse Iron Condor' Or 'Strangle' Earnings Trade [View article]
Thanks so much for commenting. I'll come back next week and tell you how I scrambled to sell so I could have the dignity of telling myself I broke even. JUST KIDDING! I am working on it. I think I need a SELL button 10x bigger than the other keys on my keyboard and maybe a candy bar reward every time and then maybe I'd develop some better habits.

Look, I'm not ready for the brass eagle and associated birds but please help a dunderhead out here: I have some March C $33 calls and I would like to know if you would sell them right now if you were me. I am about 44% up on them right now, not that it matters. I never know when to sell. Thanks in advance.

That's all right with me, though. I'm only investing - I'm not the ethics committee.

  • How A Put Option Strategy Can Beat The Market Regardless Of Direction [View article]
This has been very useful to me and I wanted to personally thank the author. Some of the commenters have enumerated some of the downsides; however, I still find this strategy beneficial to my own account. I don't have a huge account, so the funds necessary to get my brokerage to approve the transaction is a limiting factor for me. (I'm already approved for the level of trading - level 3 is sufficient at my brokerage and probably most others.) Even so, I've been able to sell various puts (carefully choosing sufficiently out-of-the-money strike prices after carefully studying the underlying companies and events influencing the stock) and watching those puts deteriorate so that I can keep the money has been fun and profitable for me.

  • E-Trade (ETFC) plans to air another high-priced ad during tomorrow's Super Bowl with a repeat performance by its talking baby set to air (sneak peek). If the ad delivers laughs again it could impact E-Trade's share price next week, as university researchers have crunched data to find a direct correlation between the likability of a Super Bowl ad and short-term stock returns. Last year, after the talking baby scored a hit, ETFC was up 2.2% the Monday after the SB and 4.2% for the week. [View news story]
As long as the masses are entertained, that's what matters. So, the more asinine, the better! Go for the pinnacle of asininity, Etrade! We have some calls that are counting on the cackling of middle America in their living rooms today.

(By the way, if you think people used to be more intelligent in some nostalgic, theoretical "good old days," you're on the wrong track. It's simply that the media caters to the lowest common denominator - consider which segment of the population watches big-screen TVs 24/7 and it makes sense.)

Thanks so much for your help above and in the other comment. I have been using my brokerage's tutorial pages and I'm aware of Investopedia, so I'll refer back to that, too. I'll also bookmark the above link and I'll read it. Thank you so much for the recommendation.

Yes, got in around .50. I have the same problem - I finally figured out that greed is my big problem. I need to learn about selling puts because I hardly understand it yet.

Bill, I wish I could go to your school. I understand very little of what you advised above about the Jan 13 (I'm admitting right now that I don't know what I'm doing), but I have a book on the way in the mail (and I read online wherever I can.) I'm only getting started. I have a lot of learning to do and I'm not sure exactly where to start.
