  • Windows 8 Is Just Fine, Microsoft's Problem Is Evolution [View article]
As an end user with not nearly the knowledge of the people on this thread bashing MSFT, I really like Win 8 and so do my wife and kids. As far as Google is concerned, we have stopped using it as a search engine because there are too many ads before getting to the intended search. I don't wish for any harm to Google and hope that their investors do well but between our enthusiasm about Windows 8 and the XBOX and the Cloud feature and our Nokia phones with MSFT OS and MSFT Office we are investing in MSFT. I don't understand people making such negative remarks. If I don't care for a stock the last thing I would do is go to articles about them and make negative comments, unless, of course, I was short the stock.

    Heck!
since we all took a bath when they missed their recent numbers, I was hoping for something in terms of a dividend increase. Guess they don't care that much about investors.

  • Nokia Siemens (NOK +0.8%) has offered the lowest bid in a China Mobile tender for 207K 4G TD-LTE base stations, undercutting local vendors Huawei and ZTE, according to a Chinese media report. China Mobile has established a $6.75B 4G capex budget for 2013, as it tries to rapidly build out its network ahead of the government's issuing of commercial licenses (expected at year's end); rival carriers are also ramping their 4G spend. The report comes ahead of Nokia's Q2 results, due tomorrow morning. Tero Kuittinen declares the quarter a "moment of truth" for Nokia, given concerns about slumping feature phone sales in emerging markets, and questions about Lumia volumes/ASPs in light of strong sales of the low-cost 520. [View news story]
I've got my seat belt on....Q2 results will be poor but news like this lets everybody know NOK is a player to be reckoned with. Bumpy ride ahead.

The phone's camera will offer optical image stabilization, a xenon flash, advanced manual controls, and a new Pro Camera app to go with its expected 41MP sensor. The 1020 will also have a 4.5", 1280x768, OLED dsplay, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, a front-facing camera with a wide-angle lens, and a dual-core, 1.5GHz., Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. Windows Phone Central reports AT&T will sell the 1020 for a hefty $299 with a 2-year contract ($100 more than the iPhone 5 or Galaxy S4), and that the phone's unsubsidized price is $699. • Microsoft (MSFT) will reportedly unveil its restructuring this week, with Thursday expected to be the day of the announcement. While the reorganization moves a lot of people around, it (intentionally?) doesn't throw up an obvious heir apparent to Steve Ballmer. The CEO is toying with changing how Microsoft reports its earnings so that it could would shield integral but money losing operations such as Bing from complaints, but which would also make the P&L less transparent. [View news story]
Well, I'm no big fan of Ballmer but it is part of his job to put the best face he can on things. I agree though, it should be 100% transparent.

  • Facebook (FB) saw some insider selling earlier this week. CTO Michael Schroepfer sold 45K shares, and CFO David Ebersman 23.4K shares. COO Sheryl Sandberg sold 176K shares two weeks ago; she still owns 17M shares. [View news story]
Those insiders still have huge positions. They are just selling a few shares for their standard of living and because they can. Someone who sells 176k shares and still has 17 MILLION shares is just getting some pocket money.
I would be hesitant in trash talking a relatively new public company with more than a BILLION subscribers. Once they figure out the right business model it will be a winner BIG TIME. IMHO
I don't own any FB shares yet but am tempted to get my feet wet.

  • More on Apple/Time Warner Cable: Sources claim the deal will give Apple TV (AAPL) users access to Time Warner Cable's (TWC) TV channels, and that an announcement is expected within a few months. The partnership appears to resemble the ones TWC has with Roku and Microsoft (for the Xbox), rather than the kind of reseller deal suggested by past reports. Apple reported selling 2M+ Apple TV units in the Dec. quarter, and has sold 13M+ to date. (game controller support[View news story]
TWC is the wrong move Cook.....give people the content they want and stop shoving other content down their throats...is anybody THINKING things through at AAPL?

  • Zynga (ZNGA +11%) soars as Kara Swisher reports Microsoft (MSFT -0.2%) Interactive Entertainment (Xbox division) chief Don Mattrick is leaving, and is set to take a "top job" at Zynga, quite possibly that of CEO. Sources claim an announcement could arrive today. Zynga chairman/CEO Mark Pincus has taken plenty of heat from both investors and employees for his performance; his giant share of Zynga's voting rights should guarantee he'll maintain control of the company whether or not a new CEO is named. [View news story]
I'm not brave enough to short either one. Another thing in ZNGA's favor is the earlier report that they would benefit greatly if online poker becomes a reality. I'm all in :-)

  • Online Poker- Why Facebook Will Be The Big Winner [View article]
Great perspective. As a poker player and a FB person, I know I would be interested. I don't own FB but this certainly makes it more interesting. Monetizing FB is crucial to its success as an investment (for me). This may well be a start. I like the author's point that investing is about connecting the dots before it happens.
