  • Blackberry 10 Is Almost Here [View article]
Bill, one thing that you fail to mention about the Pentagon wanting to support 8 million devices (BB, ios and android) is that RIM's MDM solution called Mobile Fusion (turning into BES10 next yr) is far and away the mostly likely choice for that 8 million devices contract. That is why the stock popped the day of that announcement. People who have been following this know that that product was designed to meet the needs of the US government contracts that RIM services. Now will that level of security also work for corporations, hospitals, financial institutions and car companies wanting to connect their BES servers with their QNX powered fleets, sure it will. The vision is sound, the focus is now turning to proper execution.

  • It's Raining Good News On Nokia [View article]
Sounds good, I am not too familiar with windows game development but you should also have a look at how easy this ios developer ported his game to blackberry 10. They have really been making it alot easier on their QNX based platform for game developers. Tons of cross platform development tools and platforms like union and marmalade. Heck if you have an android app, in many cases, it is ready to go for BB10, just convert to a bar file and submit.

Will windows 8 overtake RIM, maybe. But RIM is only months away from competing with their QNX based platform, which is a very very different beast than their 10 year old java platform. RIM also has much better brand awareness than windows phones especially internationally. They also have a user base of 80 million people. Also, even though alot of people are not blackberry fans in North America, everyone knows the brand, and if they come out with a winning product their enterprise customers will kickstart sales in a very strong way. Windows 8 is a rational choice because it makes sense to have all your computer's run the same OS. But with 60% of cars running QNX, the majority of Medical equipment and a host of other embedded machines running QNX, the definition of computing device could all of a sudden change quickly.

Don't get me wrong, I think Nokia will turn around. And even if not, the maps, and Patents make this stock interesting, but I wouldn't count RIM out. As in the nokia story, there are too many people trying to grab eyeballs and not enough people reporting the facts.
