Craig, please explain your issue with stop loss orders in more detail. They are standard practice for all the traders out there. From what I've seen they hurt the user more than help because they tend to get picked off intraday and then the market rebounds just like it did. So I stopped using them unless they are very close to the market price. I can see in some cases like this it could lead to a rippling down in prices by all the stopped out sell orders but then no one is forcing anyone to sell - just traders and algorithmic traders I would think and they should be geared up to get back in quick. To me those are the buying opportunities of a life time especially in view of the fact that it was obviously a function of trading not values so the market should recover quick as this realization takes hold. If the issue is that it leads innocents to bail out in mass then I could agree with that point but I don't think many every day investors are the ones using the stops. Only the trader types that have decided it was the best to be made of the situation.

I agree. It was scary. Now that it;s over people can complain or take the other side and claim moral superiority but at the time BOTH sides knew it had to be done or we would all go down. Question is what to do now. Similar to reforms in '33 deep thinking has to go into making for a more stable system or at least contain the blowups to a non-systematic threat if such a thing is possible.

Jason, I agree your article was sarcastic but it could easily be mistaken for an odd toned recommendation. At least it stirred up some informative commentary. I had thought what Hanson was doing was working well not having read much about them yet but now I'll be looking for better proof from their clinical trials first.
