  • Apple: The Dangers Of Using Bad Data To Calculate Only One Metric [View article]
Thank you for a sensible article.

I have no problem with bearish arguments for AAPL. But I do have problem when they're based on such ridiculous metrics.

He isn't shorting it. He just said so on CNBC.

Definitely a publicity stunt. I just feel a little bad for him because this will backfire very soon.

Ok buddy, you got your 15 minutes of fame.

This will backfire when the stock skyrockets to at least $545, which is the bearish count. Bullish count leads to over $800.

  • Barron's is out with its list of the 500 financially strongest companies as ranked after a rigorous cash and sales analysis. A quick filter on the list shows a good chunk of the names trade with a single-digit price to earnings ratio including Goodyear Tire & Rubber (GT). Despite all the buzz about booming auto sales in the U.S. and China, concerns about growth for Goodyear's products in other regions of the globe have lowered expectations. But with auto sale estimates for full-year being taken higher, Goodyear could see enough consistent revenue growth to justify a higher trading multiple. I read it the first five times. I think I get it.

    Yep. Got it.

  • Foxconn has frozen hiring at almost all its factories in China, as the company is reportedly slowing production in response to reduced orders for Apple's (AAPL) iPhone 5. With workers' staying at the company for less than 13 months on average, Foxconn's headcount could fall by tens of thousands. [View news story]
And of-course, AAPL falls 1.6% in pre market trading.

It was only a few weeks ago when Tim Cook said very clearly that trying to interpret the supply-chain data is useless. Investors have a shorter term memory than than that of a golden fish.

Exactly. I'm hoping weak hands are very close to be shaken.

  • Apple's Shares Are Approaching A Bottom [View article]
I agree. But I think it will recover this year.

China Mobile + an invitation event would be fantastic. I also expect the Feb investors meeting to be productive. Investors should put pressure on Apple for a buyback program. I hate to quote "analysts," but like UBS analyst said, they basically have no excuse not to expand their share repurchase program significantly. It's very puzzling.

Actually, analyses were realistic, expectations weren't. They basically put a target, and expected Apple to beat it. Which makes you wonder what's the point of a target then?

  • Apple Disappointed In Part Due To Supply Constraints [View article]
    That's actually not true.

The main problem with supply constraints is the wrong release timing. When Apple used to release iPhones in June, they had enough time to ramp up for the insane demand. But now, they're releasing in Sept/Oct, and that's just not achievable to be ready for holiday season.

Remember: last year, Apple didn't have problems ramping up iPhone 4S units because it was the same design as the iPhone 4. So they knew exactly what to do. But the iPhone 5 is a new form factor, and it was obviously challenging to meet demand.

  • Apple's Earnings Fall Is Completely Unjustified [View article]
    Great point.

Not projecting give them more flexibility on buying back programs. So they don't have to account/predict EPS with a pre-determined buy back amount.

However, we have yet to see or hear about that program. As an investor, I wish they announced it, as a rational person, research after research has shown that buying back stocks does not change long term perspectives.

You have some valid points, but you watch CNBC way too much.

Main reason stock was down is because investors were looking for a single miss in numbers and they found it in the revenue number.

You would think AAPL lost profit, when they beat EPS consensus.

I absolutely get a decline for missing revenue even if they beat on the bottom line. But an 11% decline is quite ridiculous. It is what it is. I'm holding for now, but will not buy any more unless we reach ~430$ levels. At least I've been in the stock since ~320/share. I can't imagine how some investors who got in at a much higher price.

btw, Warning for investors who are looking to short: this is the ultimate bear trap! Not saying it can't go lower, but don't bet on it. Sentiment can change in minutes with one event invitation from Apple.

  • Verizon (VZ) states on its Q4 call it activated 6.2M iPhones in Q4, good for 63% of total smartphone activations (up from 46% in Q3, and 56% in the year-ago period). Big Red had previously disclosed it activated 9.8M smartphones in the quarter. CFO Fran Shammo says about half of the iPhone sales involved the iPhone 5 - that remark comes as UBS points to survey data indicating a mix shift towards older and lower-capacity iPhone models. @Rookie

That's a good point. However, when you consider the value of the phone in three/four years time, then the iPhone 5 would make a better investment, and serve you longer.

With all due respect, that's a very narrow outlook Ashraf, and completely baseless.

While some might genuinely have that issue, I would bet that most people who buy smartphones with their expensive data plans can easily afford it, but they simply don't make calculated decisions.

Of course, I might be wrong too. But suggesting that people buying a $99 smartphone do it because they can't afford a $199 smartphone is going a little too far.

Still. A $199 device is less than 4% of what your paying Verizon for two years on the same contract.

  • Apple's Positive Uncertainty: Universal Remote iPad [View article]
I know this is a somewhat old article. But I remembered reading it back on October, and decided to look for it again. This really is a great article.

Not sure if the author follows up on comments for old writings, but I would strongly encourage you to write a follow up piece about the idea. I really think you might be on to something here.

I'm almost certain in few months, this idea of an Apple Universal Remote Control will be flowing incessantly on the news.
