    Wyo,

Would you rather they met the situation with a few Barney Fifes with their bullets in their pockets? I think if you visited some parts of "suburban" St. Louis, you'd prefer to see it "over-militarized"...

It's easy to claim a "surplus" when you pick which debt obligations you choose to not include in the budget numbers...

California is no more likely than the U.S. federal government to EVER have a "balanced budget". Any talk of a "surplus" is a bunch of B.S.

True. She's better than me at everything else, might as well hand her the stock portfolio. ;)

But $20 is not an "illusion". You can really buy the REAL metal for $20/ounce. When it was down to a "paper" value of $18 & change, you could really buy the REAL metal for $18 & change/ounce.

For the mishy-mashy markets we've had since 8/1, everyone (as of right now) is showing a profit. Good stuff! :)

I am selling out of my (NYSE:WAG) position for a quick 5% profit. I'll most likely gamble a little bit and put that money into (NYSE:KMI) and see what happens. ;)

For those curious (I was), the Montgomery County, MD "shopping bag tax" imposes a 5-cent tax on each and every paper or plastic shopping bag that a customer gets at the store (such as to put your purchased groceries in).

1-cent goes to the retailer (yay profit), and 4-cents goes to the county for "water quality protection".

From looking around, it seems this type of "tax" is en vogue in several places across the country.

    Too many damn taxes....

    Crade,

That's why I mentioned the Ag-biz classes. Most of TN is farms. FFA is very active in the high schools, too.

Those "free seats" aren't free. Our son's band fees for this school year = $550.00, plus miscellaneous stuff to buy along the way. They hold them to minimum academic standards or they can't participate. There's over 230 kids this year. :)

Same experience with us. IL prop tax was $4,800 when we left on a 1500 SF house on 3/4 acre. Here, our prop tax is $1,016 on a 2300 SF house on 2 acres.

No state income tax is just icing on the TN cake. I'm happy to pay 7.75 - 9.75% sales tax...

Very happy with our son's education here in podunk, TN. I don't think the teachers are unionized, either. VERY good band program, some good Agri-business classes...

    No civics, though.

Some of their burgers are alright, especially considering the price. The McDoubles are good - $1.19 at our local McD's.
