"To overly rely on means testing is to create a divided society, the givers and takers..."

We already have a divided society (givers/takers), with no means testing.

During the last part of my stay "up north", I worked a 4am - 1pm shift. Let me tell you - Getting up at 2:00 in the morning to dig out your driveway after the plows dumped 3 feet of snow, ice and slush in it is not pleasant.

"They don't even complain about it either."

I lived in WI for over 30 years. I complained about it ALL THE TIME!

Definitely. That's the way it should be.

Otherwise, it should not be referred to as an "insurance policy".

All government "benefits" should be means tested.

"It is an insurance policy against indigence in old age"

If you reach old age and you are not indigent, should you then not be allowed to receive it? I mean, it's an "insurance policy", right?

Does that also mean I get all (or more) of my money back that I've paid for homeowner's insurance when we sell the house, barring any claims?

How 'bout car insurance, if I don't have any claims?

Methinks you do not understand what an "insurance policy" is/means. SS stopped being (if it ever was) "insurance" long ago.

Here's another link that explains how to use the '=googlefinance' function (that's where the real-time data is pulled from). Clcik through your own holdings to see its usage. Current price and day's change are the only two real-time data pulled from the internet. The rest is manual entry.

I'd have to get Skype first, I guess... :) Yeah, I'd be willing to do that. It's really no different than an Excel sheet, though. The only difficult part of the sheet really are the formulas for the tracking portion. That part would be better covered in a semester-long Excel-201 course, though.

    EA,

Understood. But where does it show your dividends received? Where does it have your available cash to invest? It's a tracker - it is in no way dynamic. I doubt SA would devote their programmer's time to make what they have now function as a virtual portfolio competition tool.

But, like I said - if they have something besides the basic stock holding tracker, I'd love to see it.

    EA,

SA portfolios are similar to a Yahoo Finance portfolio. It is user managed, and does not count for dividends, etc. All pertinent information can be updated by the user (shares owned, price paid, etc.)

I may be mistaken, but I've never seen anything on SA that resembles our current structure. If there is a link to a group portfolio that is similar, I'd like to see it.

    Thanks.

If your game, that's cool with me. Even trading off weeks or something would make me more willing to continue on with this format... I'm still going to check out the MW virtual portfolio system to see how that works...

If you're comfortable with Google spreadsheets, you can start now if you want. :) For personal trades, etc., just announce in here before you make the changes.
