  • Internet Marketing – Expenditures are NOT dropping in 2009

Internet Marketing budgets are NOT decreasing in 2009! On the contrary, many leading firms are now apportioning more of the total advertising budget and specifically their direct marketing budget to internet-based campaigns. More importantly, these campaigns are expanding on numerous fronts.

The underlying reason for this continued growth and expansion is simple – One-to-One Marketing is rapidly becoming reality. Users are employing more sophisticated search queries that substantially reduce the number of total results while dramatically improving their relevance. Succes... companies are responding with a myriad of internet marketing campaigns that align with these more specific queries.

Let’s examine key areas where this investment is growing:

    • Search Engine Optimization– Companies in the most competitive markets understand the importance of investing in Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This trend is expanding to other markets as business owners realize that SEO is the only true investment that ensures long-term performance. SEO monies, unlike other internet-based advertising strategies, build brand awareness and increase the company’s overall valuation.

    • Pay Per Click – This complementary strategy remains idea for a quick strike campaign that generates an immediate surge of interest for an existing offering. Pay Per Click (PPC) is also an excellent vehicle from which to launch new products/services prior to the SEO efforts kicking in.  Companies are learning that Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo (YHOO) and others are the only companies that accrue valuation gains from PPC.

    • Enhanced Content Ads – Support for graphic and rich-media content ads allows companies to create more sophisticated, targeted campaigns that produce better than their predecessors. Res... show that prospective customers click graphic and rich-media content ads more frequently than their more static forerunners.

    • Targeted Radio/TV Ads – Ongoing fragmentation of radio and television markets further stratifies audiences making them more valuable than ever before. Companies can affordably address very specific demographics with a very targeted message.

    • Conversion Tracking – Companies are aggressively re-appropriating advertising dollars to Internet Marketing because it works. Accurate performance tracking, done on a near real-time basis supports constant scrutiny of all campaigns with winners continued & expanded and losers tossed aside immediately.

One-to-One Marketing will continue accelerated growth and Internet Marketing will be its main vehicle for the foreseeable future.

  • A Business Man’s Perspective on Internet Marketing, CRM, Mobile Computing, Open Source and ROI

Having been actively engaged in business computer for the last 30+ years, the impressions, lessons and experiences have me bursting at the seam. My associates and friends have been telling me for months that I need to find a productive outlet to share what they perceive as my “wealth of knowledge” on a handful of business computing platforms.

Through my business computing journey I’ve designed, created, marketed, sold and used a wide array of business computing platforms including:

    •  Internet Marketing– the marketing web land rush is on; yellow pages and print media are heading for extinction. How fast are companies securing their stake in the Web2.0 space? Do most companies have a strategy to secure their position on the web? These are but two of many issues business leaders must confront to remain competitive.

    • CRM – Customer Relationship Management has around since the 1980s. Is it finally ubiquitous enough to be the framework for the next business generation? Sales... (CRM) and Sage Systems want
you to believe it. What does the market say?

    • Mobile Computing – Blackberry has been the dominant mobile business tool of choice of more than a decade. Is that about to change? Is Microsoft (MSFT) ready to finally ready to compete with Window Mobile and will Apple (AAPL) finally gain critical mass in the mobile computing arena.

    • Open Source Software – UNIX and Linux, the open source pioneers, took decades to breaking into corporate America. Even with the backing of AT&T (ATT) UNIX, until recently, was a “bit” player. Open source solutions like Open Office, vTiger, and others are gaining traction in the mainstream business community. Why?&a... your company be there?

    • ROI – perhaps the most controversial aspect of any software decision is Return on Investment. What are the metrics, who keeps score, do you consider Price or Total Cost of Ownership and for what period of time?

Each of these platforms contributed meaningfully to the business’s success. Without these platforms, the results would have been much worse and several businesses would have failed.

I’m planning to share my thoughts/experience on each of these categories during the coming weeks/months. I&a... provide the thought process my companies and my customers’ companies went through when evaluating, implementing and managing these platforms in a wide variety of environments. I&a... share the success stories and the failures. And I’ll offer my impressions on the latest developments in each area.
