Will Carbon Dioxide Drive the Next Great Commodities Boom? [View article]
There already is a "commodity market" for CO2. It is known as "carbon offsets". Al Gore (Chairman of Generation Investment Management LLP and very vocal proponent of the theory of man-made global warming), is a player in the carbon offset "market". Conflict of interest?
@ Mark Anthony - I "ran" my bank account several months ago. I bought a small safe, converted all but what is needed to pay bills into cash, and bought some "junk" (pre-1964) silver coins. Over the years I have purchased a few gold American Eagles and "junk" silver but I about doubled my physical gold/silver holdings in the past 6 months. The cash and precious metals are just going to sit in my safe until I am convinced it is safe to go back in the water.
Regarding bank runs... I wonder how many people are aware that they are already limited in the amount of cash they can withdraw at any one time. I don't know about any other banks but Bank of America will not allow me to withdraw more than $1,000 in cash per day. If a lot of people attempted to get cash at the same time and ran into this limit, I can imagine panic setting in.
I'm not going to take the time to break this all down so let me just point out one critical factor glaringly conspicuous in its absence. Mr. Wiegand states, "...Americans' longstanding (and misguided) obsession with cutting taxes, which is the primary reason the federal debt has been allowed to explode out of control (and California is on the brink of bankruptcy)". So, if this is true, government spending only played a minor role? Talk about cognitive dissonance...
Why Wal-Mart Hirings Do Not Help U.S. Economy [View article]
What? Wal-Mart employees are "forced" to seek government assistance because of low wages? Are these people herded into Wal-Mart at gunpoint? Carneades, every Wal-Mart employee can walk away from their job at any time or not accept the job in the first place. The fact that thousands of people accept (and keep) these jobs under the terms offered clearly indicates they decided they are better off with a Wal-Mart job than without it. The source of your data gives the game away. Your piece is standard Democrat partisan politics - demonize the successful under the guise of "helping" the "oppressed".
